SCSU 3 - DU 2 FINAL

(above) Anthony Maiani against St. Cloud on Saturday night

St. Cloud State University upset the University of Denver 3-2 on Saturday night at Magness Arena. The Huskies led the entire game, but two Third Period goals by DU's Tyler Ruegsegger kept things exciting almost led to a thrilling comeback.

Goaltender Marc Cheverie suffered his first loss of the season. DU is only 2-4-1 on Saturday night games this season.

DU will play Colorado College next weekend in a home and home series. CC lost to UAA 3-2 in overtime on Friday night.

Pathetic 1st period. Pioneers need to get their heads out of their asses.

More like pathetic first 50 minutes. And then, just when the Pios get thing going, the wonderful WCHA officiating steps in (or doesn't as the case may be) and leaves us wondering what the outcome may have been if it were a well called game.

Who wants to start a pool for another mascot... I got a $1000 towards a Bruce McLeod costume since that's the only way the officials do a DECENT job.

It's very unusual for a Gwozdecky-led team to have a crappy and downright lazy 2nd AND 3rd period like we saw for the most part tonight. Usually he rips thier asses during intermission and they come out on fire. If they did get thier asses reamed.... and if they were on fire... the arena staff sprayed them with halon fire extinguishers between the locker room and the ice enterance. SCSU is not that good - and DU is not that bad.

At least CC lost, too...

i must say i really like the energy the freshman line brought this weekend, but i have been disappointed by the senior line majority of this season so far.

Freshmen brought energy but still haven't adapted well to the college game.

This wasn't loss about officiating. Denver took more penalties because they were a step behind SCSU for the entire first period, 85% of the second and the first half of the third period. SCSU won the loose pucks and moved their feet.

Denver is 7-0 on Fridays, 2-4-1 on Saturdays. If they don't fix the effort level on Saturdays, they won't have much of a chance for anything in the post-season.

These guys only play twice a week, and if you can't get yourself up for a league game at home, you need to question

Agreed about the Freshman comment. Drew Shore was a ROCK STAR in Michigan with the USNDTP.... but in about 2 or even 3 years, he will be a legend at DU...... you'll see. And Donno will be right beside him... Freshmen bring the energy & excitement.... but they turn into leaders and play-makers as upper-classmen. This team will get it's due.......

The game wasn't about officiating, agreed Swami. The call on the bench minor was interesting especially after hearing GG's explanation in the post game interview.

Maybe this team needed a loss like this after last weekend. Of course if a 7-3 drubbing by UAA doesn't send a message...

Give St. Cloud a lot of credit--they played with more urgency and effort overall and deserved to win. They have some talented players, no doubt.

Still----I have a hard time stomaching this one. This was a series that, quite frankly, DU should have swept. I just can't get past that feeling. The leaders on this team have to figure out a way to get these guys playing 60 minutes each and every night. I'm frustrated after this loss.

Here's a stat for you.

Except for Chevy's four shutouts, DU has trailed in every other game this season. All ten games.

Where is the Goal Czar????????

The game wasn't about officiating...

Oooooh....Jordan has spoken with is usual righteousness in following with everyone else's comments. I must bow down to the greatest of hockey analysts here.

I would try to explain my original comment.. but I have a feeling the time would be wasted on you saps. I got better things to go do, like clean the wax out of my dogs ears

Don't dump on Jordan. Dump on me if you think officiating was the issue last night - I was the one who made the original comment about officiating. Everyone knows the WCHA officials aren't great, but the good teams score enough goals to overcome bad officiating, which is part of the game.

You were correct about the first 50 minutes. The Pioneers were clearly lethargic for most of that time, and that's why they lost the game. DU is a very good-to-excellent team when they play hard, and a very lousy team when they take big chunks of the night off, like last night. You can tell how hard a team is trying the drive in their feet - are they moving with purpose, or just stepping and gliding. Good teams move their feet, they battle for loose pucks, block shots and finish checks. DU didn't do much of that last night in the first 50 minutes, and SCSCU is a speedy team with quality forwards, took advantage of DU's Saturday night malaise.

The Pioneers need to play with much more urgency in their game. Their season depends on it.

God our fans are pathetic. At least they decided to start cheering 45 minutes into the game. Unless you count the youth hockey last second goal during the intermission. I have been coming to DU hockey since '92 and the fans just keep getting more and more PATHETIC.

No students in the building really hurts the noise level on those games when the kids are on break.

The rest of the DU crowd is simply not all that emotionally invested in the Pioneers. It's an upscale crowd of older folks, hockey moms and regular folks who like watching hockey games, but they just aren't passionate enough about DU for that interest to become vocal.

As a private school in a town with a ton of other teams to cheer for, DU simply does not get the emotional investment from the people in the building. Students have emotional investment, but even then, it's a small number of them.

I'm the first to bitch when officials take away the game. The bench minor was questionable and the missed trip on Dunn was way worse than Chevy's. But if you're really honest about it you can't blame that loss on the refs- DU didn't play like they wanted it.

And I never claimed to be an all knowing hockey analyst?! It's a comment on a blog. Which I'm often first to, so how do I follow everyone else's righteousness? Buzz off.

I must add it's very classy of you to come on here and use the convenience of the anonymous tag with comments like that. You're the true great hockey analyst here.

One more time, anyone know that status of the Goal Czar????

I've been wondering where Luke is as well. And Nate, too. And what the hell is with Cody? I guess the coaches have thier team. Just shows, if you want to play, you have to prove yourself early in October and force them to put you on a line.

Anonymous said...

As long as we're doing "where are they now", where's "Saint" Nicholas Larson?

du78 said...

RE: Luke Salazar - no goals and 3 assists in 10 games will get you a seat in the press box for a goal scorer.

Gwoz said the week before that Cody Brookwell didn't play because of illness. He said nothing this past week about Cody and played the same line-up for three games in a row which resulted in 2 wins and a loss.

Jordan said...

Cody had H1N1 the week before UND and missed classes

Twister said...

I'll be curious where Brookwell fits in once he gets healthy. DU's top 6 right now are Wiercioch (even though he doesn't look 100% yet), Donovan, Lee, Nutini, Ryder and Wrenn, in my opinion.

Brookwell is a bit of an enigma to me. For a guy who is listed at 6'4 225 he's not an overly physical player. Certainly a big body, but hasn't been the physical presence he likely could be. And that's what he needs to be. Assuming he's back in the lineup soon the odd man out, in my opinion, should be Wrenn.

Anonymous said...

No way Wrenn gets bounced. He's played very well this season from my recolection...only one game where I actually blamed him for anything. Brookwell may wind up being the 7th guy.

Anonymous said...

Before I forget to tell y'all.... CC SUCKS

Anonymous said...

Cody should have to earn his spot back in the top 6. I highly doubt he'll be guaranteed anything, even though he's a senior.

Anonymous said...

Funny that DU fans would complain about the refs when they got such favorable reffing during the UND and DU games. . I am not sure why one you would make that comment especially the UND series...

You're not going to get 6 power plays in your favor in a row every game and probably won't happen again this season.

Also, I heard Gwoz got a bench minor for arguing with the ref during Saturday's game, I guess they are now on to his act.

Jordan said...

I will complain about a couple of calls like the bench minor (which occurred after a blatant trip by Dunn that was at least as bad as the trip called against Chevy), but will also admit there were no-calls against DU in the 2nd period last Saturday. UND took stupid calls towards the end of the 2nd but DU probably would have too.

The Pioneers lost to SCSU because they didn't earn it and St. Cloud did. Plain and simple.

I'm sure there'll be follow up comments to this because I agree with Swami, or said something bad about DU instead of the refs, or something along those lines? I'm apparently the "greatest hockey analyst of all time."

I hear that! I can hear you biothin at them across the ice in my section, I don't pay much never mind to Mr/Mrs Anonymous anyhow. I just wish they were numbered so I could keep tabs on them.
