DU Has Glorified Bye Week

(left) Mmmm...Cupcakes

Wish we could tell you that this weekend's games against Mercyhurst & Air Force will be a "stern test" for the University of Denver hockey team, but if we did we'd be lying. This weekend has "cupcake" written all over it.

DU should get together with Hostess and give out 5,000 free Cup-Cakes, Ding-Dongs or Twinkees if the Pioneers fail to score five goals on Friday night against Mercyhurst. That would keep things interesting for two periods.

The American Hockey Association, of which Air Force & Mercyhurst are members, are 8-43-5 against non-conference opponents. Mercyhurst is 0-6-0 in non-conference games and Air Force is 0-4-0.

The Air Force game is more of a concern. Cadet Ice Arena will be sold out and they will be all pumped up to beat DU. They defeated Colorado College last year 4-1, DU 5-2 in 2008 and only lost to DU & CC by 2-1 scores in 2006-07. Luckily CC will soften them up on Friday night.

We'll guess that Murray will start on Friday. If he gets a shutout, why not trot him out against Air Force? Keep the Chevy in the garage.

We'll spend this week drumming up support for Boone on campus and keeping an eye on Chancellor Coombe as he attempts to jack-up tuition for the sixth straight year on the job.

Hey I went to the Air Force game a couple of years ago when DU was handed their hat. Don't look past them.

BTW, I am having some fun on the UND blog.

How rare - but I completley disagree with you DG. They just went through a huge series and overcame some great hurdles & mental barriers....now is not the time to relax. Rather, I say go into this weekend on fire..... and God have mercy on whoever this team faces, because they should rip any team apart right now. PLEASE don't create any bad Omens! That would be a catastrophe to fall to one of these teams in the wake ot sweeping the Sioux.

Cupcakes or not, DU needs to take care of business this weekend. I highly doubt anyone will be looking past Air Force, but it's up to the coaches and leaders on this team to make sure there are no letups. It would be a shame if the Pios lose the momentum from this past weekend.

I've been wrong plenty of times before. :-)

I'd like see the team have an easy week at practice and come out and just have fun this weekend.

Too often this season, DU has been in pressure packed situations in hostile arenas. Don't let the stupid Pairwise System hold you hostage all season and be worn out by the playoffs.

This team needs to only have two goals. Get to Detroit Frozen Four & win when they get there.

D.G> we are all ganging up on you with your cup cake predictions.Me too!
But I would like to see Gwoz take a flyer on Murray. This mercyhurst game would be a good time.I haven't given up on this kid like some of us have. He has a long record of quality playing, it's still there somewhere. If we can get his confidence back it could be important for next year.

Mercyhurst: DU Better Beat Them. They have no excuses to.

Air Force: We all know they can play with the best and beat the best. If they underestimate them they will come back to get you. That's how they have played in the past few years.

Didn't we all think alaska would be an easy win earlier in this season?

True.

But we didn't promise free cupcakes before the Alaska series. :-)

Memo to DU: don't take AFA lightly. Do that and get your asses kicked just like in 2008.

The next two teams have no chance of beating DU. Not if they play like they did this weekend. NONE, NIX, NINE, NAY...

I think DG is right start the back up goalie Adam Murray for the next two games.

Of course if DU played every game like they do against North Dakota & Minnesota, DU would be 26-0-0 right now and everyone would still want to start Chevy.

Its a good thing DU isn't playing the Mercyhurst women's hockey team. They are #2 in the Polls this week.

I agree that Murray should start on Friday. I think that would raise the level of concentration for the rest of the team, as they would surely not want to let him down with sloppy play.

After watching Coach Steve Miller's press conference yesterday, I'm almost certain Murray is going to start in goal.

The decision will be made on Thursday and the starting goaltender will be notified after practice on Thursday.

Murray has been working hard and learning from Chevy the concentration and preparation that is needed to be a successful goaltender.
