Just another great player who's been the heart and sole of this team since day one. He will be deeply missed and wish him the best in Toronto. Though before he leaves I hope he is able to carry around that National Title.
I haven't been following DU hockey most likely as long as some other posters on here, but I think it's safe to say Ruegsegger is one of the finest players to ever wear the Pioneer sweater.
That's a hell of a statement Twister, considering some of the players that D.U. has had over the last 60 years. Ruegs is very good but the next level up has some super players, most of them making it to successful careers in the NHL
Ruegs may not be the best skater to wear the Crimson and Gold, but I'd put him at the top of an elite group of DU players than personify the "Student-Athelete". Ruegs is our real-life Wheaties Box version of the fictional letter-sweater wearing, malt-shop-dwelling/aw shucks American football heroes such as Jack Armstrong, Frank Merriwell, Dink Stover or Chip Hilton - the the kind of person you'd want your own kid to be - committed to atheltics, academics and living like an upstanding citizen.
Its an interesting topic of where he ranks all time.
He's going to end up as one of the Top 50 scorers at DU with 120+ points. Considering this is the "low scoring era" of college hockey, he gets the benefit of the doubt with his points totals.
On the otherhand, DU players from the early Seventies and before could only play three varsity seasons, having to sit out their Freshman year.
No doubt he is one of the most couragous, toughest, tenacious players I've ever seen. I mean Kermit Ecklebarger tough, but a much better player than Kermit.
Like every player who's ever played at DU, you are defined by the postseason. Score a Game Winning Goal in the NC game like Gabe Gauthier did and your stock goes way up.
There are easily a dozen past D.U. players who were better than Ruegs. He is excellent, they were great. Guys like Masterton.Johnny Macmillan, Georgr Konic,Marty Howe, Jim Wiste, Miller, Carl, that I can think of off the top of my head. Let me sit back with a nice glass of wine and I'll come up with some more.
