The Florida Panthers have signed University of Denver goaltender Marc Cheverie to a two-year entry-level contract.

The 23-year-old, selected in the seventh round (193rd overall) of the 2006 NHL draft by the Panthers, will forgo his senior year of NCAA Division I hockey with the Denver Pioneers to turn pro.

Cheverie was named player of the year in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and was one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award as the nation’s most outstanding player after leading the NCAA in wins (24) while posting a 2.08 goals-against average, .932 save percentage and six shutouts.

“He is a very talented prospect who we believe will have a bright future in our organization,” Panthers general manager Randy Sexton said.

“He has gained tremendous experience while playing at Denver and we look forward to his continued growth and development.”

Sources told Metro Cheverie’s deal is valued at $1.7 million over two years at the NHL level, including $170,000 in signing bonuses and the potential for $212,500 in performance bonuses in 2010-11. He would earn $62,500 at the minor-league level.

23 years-old and with a DU Diploma in hand, well done Chevy. Not much reason to come back for his Senior year.

Congrats Chevy. He will be missed and I look forward to seeing ya up in the NHL someday.

Next year is not looking so well though...

Serious conflict of interests with me. I'd love to have seen Chevy, Colborne, and Wiercoche stay and win a championship...But these are seriously talented guys who are probably making the smart decision and I wish them the best.

Chevy was smart enough to graduate a year early. With a degree in hand and a potential contract waiting, not much motivation to come back

DU won the Battle of Brittain.

Wait until the Sioux, Tigers, Gophers and Badgers get a look at Great Brittain.

We're trading the Chevy for an entire island.

There is still a log jam in Florida in goal. Chevy must have been happy about Florida's plans for him or he wouldn't have signed.

These are big losses for the Pioneers, but good programs have these kind of losses all the time.

The Pioneers will still have about 10 seniors next year and will be a very experienced team, but not as talented as last year. DU will have one of the WCHA's better defenses to keep games close. They won't be at the top all year, but I think they'll still be in the hunt.

From reading about the future of the Florida team, it seems they are ready to re-vamp it which means a number of veterans will be traded or released. From what I hear it sounds like the Panthers will trade #1 goalie Tomas Vocun and it appears that they would like stud goalie propspect Markstrom to eventually be Clemmensen's back-up at some point next season. There is still a log jam with two other goalies already at the AHL level. At best Chevy will play in the AHL but will likely start in the ECHL with the Florida Everblades.

So is Murray staying or leaving?

Murray said to Mike Chambers of the Denver Post that his leaving is just a rumor. He will be back at DU next season.

Congrats to Chevy! I'm happy he stayed around and got his diploma instead of just leaving empty handed. Looking forward to seeing him in the NHL.

Murray was highly recruited and was a good soldier this year and benefited from riding some pine. Remember Cheverie subbed in for Mannino a time or two and didn't look as solid as Murray did in Albany. Murray's gonna be solid.
He is no Joe Howe!!
