The DU Bookstore sells a shirt that says, “University of Denver Football — Undefeated Since 1961.” It was 50 years ago this month — on Thanksgiving Day 1960 — that the University of Denver played its last football game.

At the time, no one knew it was the last game, but after much deliberation the University announced its decision to terminate the program the following January. Chancellor Chester Alter noted an annual football deficit of $100,000 as a deciding factor [read rest of article]

Our football history is richer than most people realize:

1) DU played in the first game west of the Mississippi in 1885 against CC. CC won 12-0, but CC later admitted to using non-students in the game.

2) DU played aganist the legendary Jim Thorpe in 1908. DU lost 8-4 at home to the Carlisle Indian School.

3) DU played in the Sun Bowl, Alammo Bowl and Pineapple Bowl in the 40s and 50s. Didn't win any of them.

4) The $100,000 deficit that killed the program in 1960-61 would be about $750,000 in today's dollars.

5) DU prouduced a number of NFL players. One was John Woudenberg, who had never played the game prior to arriving at DU. He went on to 10 year NFL career. DU also produced Sam Etchevarry, who went to the CFL Hall of Fame.

I had an offer from CC to play football for them after college - Chose to go to DU even without football because ...

1) Always thought CC sucked - almost laughed at the guy when he asked after All-State game

2) Daniels College of Business

3) Knew football wasn't going anywhere beyond HS anyway except to joint pain land (already there anyway though).

4) Did I mention that CC sucks?

I am kind of amazed that CC hung on to D-III football as long as they did before dropping the sport a few years ago (2008?).

There were no D-III opponents anywhere near here...
