Unless we get positive news about Jesse in the next few days I will find it difficult to enjoy the C.C. game this friday. As one, we all wait and pray for our number 14.

Jesse Martin called Malone today and talked for 10 minutes because he was concerned about Malone's well being after hearing that he was struggling. What a class kid Jesse is. I hope this serves as a wake up call to Malone and other players. Malone, in my opinion, has a history of reckless hits which have bordereed on being dirty throughout his career. There has to be a respect for the game and a respect for other players (regardless of the sweater they are wearing). There is no room for hits to the head and the WCHA and others need to start enforcing the rules they have in place.

My prayers go out for Jesse and his family.

Just posted the link above to the Martin & Malone phone call.

This is turning out to be an amazing story.

Wow, how sad, for the Martins and Pioneer family to have to go through this. Kind of takes the thrill away from what should normally be a great rivalry weekend. I wish there wasn't even a game this week. Hopefully the guys can focus in the practices and get a win or 2 this weekend for #14. I'm sure Jesse wouldn't want it any other way. GO DU!

Jesse Martin is a class act on and off the ice. He is a great kid -our thoughts and prayers are with Jesse and his family during this difficult time!

It would be great if there were a large, I mean really large, get well card that was setup at Magness for all fans to sign Friday night.

We could send it to the hospital.

I for one would be happy to contribute to the expenses.

msbdu- I'd contact Angel Field angel.field@du.edu

Anon, thanks I just sent an email to Angel. Let's see if we can get this project pulled together by Friday.

Put me down for fifty bucks!

Thanks Alum. We are going to make this happen, I just received an email from Angel and she is going to get back to me as soon as possible.

I would appreciate any help from other alums. Let's make this happen!

Just an absolutely brilliant idea. Hope Angel and all of us make it happen.

We are going to make this happen, I promise everyone. This is as important as anything we could do for DU.

If you want to help, DG has my email address.

I'm going to send a get well poster through the student section on Friday night as well.

Amy- bring it to the d.u.g.s. tailgate before the game. Perhaps might be good to coordinate the 2 as well.

Sounds good.

The Students will be out in full force. Not only is it CC week but its also a whiteout. This is such a great idea and is a great way to bring about a sense of community.

First off, best wishes to Jesse and his family. If/when I have a son, I hope he is half the man that Jesse is.

Secondly, is it too early to get into a discussion of violence in sports? Whether the hit was legal or not...Malone was clearly trying to send Martin into another galaxy. Which, by itself, is perfectly legal and encouraged by peers, coaches, fans and media. A vast majority of people (at least males) cheer when a player on their team legally crushes a player on another team. Later in the evening, ESPN will show the replay on Top 10.

In this situation, with Martin unbalanced, Malone could have accomplished the same tactical advantage with a simple poke check or much lighter body check. But, he saw an opportunity to make a big hit and he took full advantage of it. I don't fault him for this...because it is human nature and what he is rewarded for (by peers, coaches, fans, media, etc.).

This topic was recently discussed on ESPN radio in relationship to football and all of their head and neck injuries. Essentially, it's not good enough to tackle a guy, you need to crush him. Don't go for his legs and trip him up, go for his upper body and flatten him.

As fans, do we have a moral responsibilty to refrain from cheering unnecessary bone crunching checks? Should the NCAA implement rules penalizing "unnecessary roughness"? I don't know what the answer is. I don't want hockey to turn into a tennis match, but at the same time, one (or more) broken neck(s) per season is too much for me.

Perhaps it's just a necessary evil that we have to live with. Much like driving. You can do all you want to try and make things safer but there will still be accidents no matter what.

Sorry for the ramble. Guess I just feel sorry for Jesse and wish it didn't happen.

I will have a table setup at the south entrance to the arena. Anyone who would like to help, please let me know.

Aluuum said...

Msbdu-- your table shoud be inside and worked for both brfore the game and between periods. The south end has the fewest people entering of the three entrences. You will need some enthusiastic(I'm one) assistents to circu;ate and let people know what we are doing and where the card is to sign. We want at least 2,000 signuteres.

msbdu said...

Which entrance would you suggest? DU will be providing a table for us. I am going over to Fast Signs tomorrow to order the banner. I was planning on having the table setup before the game and between periods. I would apprecite any help.

This CC fan would be willing to help out - and I think I'm not alone - if you let us win a game this weekend...

Aluuum said...

The entrence with the most traffic is the north entrence.

du78 said...

msbdu, although I am almost 2,000 miles away and can't help you there I have an additional suggestion. You should contact Angel again and see if she can have both the DU and CC teams sign the card.

msbdu said...

Great idea DU 78. I will try and get the banner to her by Thursday so that at least the DU team can sign it. Not sure about the CC but I will sure ask her.

Make sure that everyone reading this blog who is at the game Friday night stop by the table.

du78 said...

Just let us know where the card will be and when and we'll post a schedule so people will know.

msbdu said...

I should know more tomorrow after I place the order with Fast Signs. I have sent the request to Angel to get team signatures.

I would like to pickup the banner no later than Thursday. I am planning to keep it pretty simple. Just the DU logo and of course a picture of Boone. It will probably say something like our thoughts and prayers are with you Jesse.

As I said, anyone who is in Denver is welcome to help me with this project.

If Jesse is unable to attend this weekend's game, it would be cool if DU could at least get a bedside video of him saying good luck to his teammates and could play it on the big scoreboard screen for the crowd.

I'm sure the fans want to let Jesse know we are thinking of him...
