DU 2 - Northern Michigan 2 FINAL

Despite a huge shooting advantage, the University of Denver could only manage two goals against Northern Michigan on Saturday night in Magness Arena. DU needed a third period goal from freshman defenseman David Makowski to salvage the 2-2 tie.

Denver outshot Northern Michigan 46-10, including 22-1 in the second period.

Kyle Ostrow scored DU's first goal after the Pioneers trailed 2-0 after giving up two goals in the first eight minutes of the game.

Luke Salazar missed a penalty shot early in the third period after NMU covered the puck in the crease preventing an almost certain goal.

DU dominated vast stretches of play despite the absences of Jason Zucker, Drew Shore, Jesse Martin and Beau Bennett. Gwozdecky mentioned in his postgame comments that he expects Bennett to return for Denver's next game. The remaining Pioneer players responded to the increased ice time and new roles admirably this weekend.

DU will have a bye week next weekend before resuming WCHA play against Minnesota State-Mankato. The Pioneers are 9-1-2 in their last 12 games.

Good DU effort in the second and third periods tonight, but DU ran into a very hot goalie in Coreau,

DU will take 3 points with some of its best players out of the lineup.

DU does need to find a way to come out of the gate sharper, or this would have been a sweep.

Britian showed his lay off. both goals he would have stopped last month.

DU finishes their non-conference schedule at a very respectable 4-2-2. Their only losses were to BC. They ran into a hot goalie tonight and are sitting nicely at #6 in PWR.

How about that Joe Brehm, eh? He ain't drafted by an NHL team; he probably won't be getting paid to play ice hockey, in say, 9 months from now... but here he is, persevering through 4 years of college, and still contributing to this team, playing like a warrior and doing what needs to be done. HE is a great example of why I love NCAA sports. Thanks, JB! That was awesome

Yep Brehm played well. Also liked the effort by Cook and Dewhurst. K. Ostrow was working like a dog all night. I give NM credit they played us tight tonight. The goalie was the difference. Salazar could not buy a goal. Not sure how S. Ostrow missed that chance late.

I was not impressed by NM's coach--he's a hot head and left the ice and didn't shake hands with DU's players. Ugly display/role model for his players. Someone should take him out back and shoot him.

All in all a good weekend given that we just came off a long break and missed four of our stars.

See you in a couple of weeks for AA. Only 14 games left people.

One great sign heading down the strech the D has tightened up. I love the way Nutini works.

Happy New Year Swami

"if they knew anything about the game, they would be in the game."

McPhee is partially right. I was in hockey professionally for about 5 years working in the collegiate, NHL and international game, working and learning from some of the best people at the highest levels of the sport. In short, I know the game, and when I was in it, I viewed it as he does.

But just because someone isn't 'in the game' doesn't mean they don't know something about the sport. You can learn plenty by playing, watching, reading and talking to others.

Water boy? Cute, but wrong.

Actually, I was paid for my skills and hockey brain at a management level.

Nice try.

Thanks for playing.
