Initially in 2009, people in the DU Athletic Dept. weren't sure about what to do around Boone. He was new, he wasn't official and there was no precedent for something like this.
But over the last couple of years, I think DU knows he's popular and while they haven't endorsed him or financed him officially, the climate is warming...
You are right swam, they are facing up to reality. But,if they had a choice, they would like to see him go away. They are now starting to realize that he won't.
I actually don't think they want him to go away. Many people in high positions at DU may publically distance themseleves from him for PC/job reasons, but privately, they'll tell you they love it -- the energy he brings and the professional manner in which Boone was developed and trained. You also see a lot of Boone making his way into various promotional contexts now (webm, scoreboard, etc.), and I think they "look the other way" way when he finds his way on to the basketball court. You also notice that Ruckus, the old mascot, is very rarely seen....
Our Boone movement has effectivly killed Ruckus. They just have not officially said so. The chicken is on life support with the oxygen supply about to run out.
The last live Ruckus sighting (at least to to my knowledge) was at the Magness Arena press conference last November when DU announced it was joining the WAC in 2010.
Boone and Ruckus were both there and even posed for pictures together.

What ever happened to DU teams and people not being able to be seen with Boone?
Gwoz is as much of a face of DU as anyone.
I'm pretty sure that was never an official policy of the DU Athletic Department.

Boone is doing well.
One of the people handing the WCHA scholar awards out on the ice this weekend was wearing a Boone baseball cap.
I thought Ruckus retired, and was living in The Villages in Florida drawing his pension.

Since then, all Boone, no Ruckus.
Sorry -- meant to say that DU joins the WAC in July of 2012.
Word has it that Hawaii left the WAC after they saw Ruckus. Damn bird.
