WCHA Playoff Game Two: DU 3 * MSU-M 2 Final OT

The formula remained the same on Saturday night in Magness Arena. Allow Minnesota State to jump out to a 1-0 lead and then turn on the jets in the third period.

DU eventually won early in overtime on a Jason Zucker goal, but this game could easily been lost a number of times in a dramatic third period. DU tied the game 1-1 on a power play goal by Matt Donovan.

After the Mavericks quickly responded with a goal, David Makowski performed his magic to knot the score at two apiece.

Despite the win, DU dropped a spot on the Pairwise to 6th.  Miami leapfrogged the Pioneers after a sweep against Alaska.

Can we please score the first goal occassionaly.

DU could score first occasionally, but then they'd win every game. :-)

USCHO sucks Anderson's balls who in turn sucks himself. Site goes down at key times.

But, a great win by DU. Poor Landcows, Corncows and Minny. Enjoy your golf boys!

Is it known yet if the WCHA final five DU playoff game will be televised anywhere or on Pioneer Vision?

DU advances in two games after leading MSUM for less than three minutes all weekend.

MSUM played very tough and could easily have won tonight.

Pios got the clutch goals, but not without pushing DU to the limit.

DU will need to play with more consistent effort as the opponents get tougher.

All Final 5 Games will be on FSN-North. In the past FSN-Rocky Mountain has picked up the DU games, but that is not for certain yet.

WCHA Final Five is televised by FSN North. I would look for the DU games to be picked up by FSN RM. In the past the tourney has also been picked up by Fox College Sports (FCS).

Jay Z is a big time goal scorer!

At this point, I don't know if FSN-RM or Altitude will pick up the games. But my best guess is that FSN-North, based in Minny will have the games. The challenge there is that they do show Minnesota Wild games. To get FSN-North, you must have a sports package with your provider. But many sports bars, including Campus Lounge, do. I'm sure that any reputable sports bar will have the games.

USCHO crashes every weekend now and it is very frustrating. I am spending most of the game on Bacher's DU blog.

The way to scout D.U> to beat us is heavy forechecking on our defensmen. I'm concerned about that part of our game. our offensive lines play welll but our defense is shackey with dono at the top of that list.

@du78

As you are aware, I do too. USCHO needs to figure out their bandwidth/server issues. It sucks. They'll lose peeps in droves if they don't change it up.

Donovan saved DU's ass tonight.

I'm fairly certain that this is not DU's year to win it all, but who knows. My money is on NoDak (sad to say), but they seem to have the nailed the formula for the elixer to win it all. They are playing awesome hockey, hot at the right time of year, a good mix of size and speed, have heart and determination, and will have a great seed. Weakness? Maybe goaltending, but we shall see. Of course I said about the same thing in 2004. :)

USCHO has been getting worse the last few weeks. I had trouble getting on this morning (Sat.)
Glad DU has the blog. You don't get to see your post instantly, but then again that's true on USCHO these days,

Wasn;t the prettiest game tonight especially the l-o-o-o-ng 2nd period. But I approve of the results.:-}

What a roller coaser of a game. Msu goal reviewed and denied with no time. Anderson making sure the penalty box was stocked with Pios. Despite all that DU wins. Zuck's goal was huge and so was Great Brittains in the crease goal stick save.

When will the WCHA wiseup and give Anderson a permanent game misconduct. He is the worse.

I am certain security had to escort him out of the arena.

The Pairwise is is just crazy this time of year.

CC won last night and jumped up 6 spots. DU won and fell a spot.

If DU had lost, who knows how far they would have fallen.

DU won and fell a spot. Denver's win over Minnesota State knocked the Mavericks of the "TUC Cliff" and DU's 5-0-1 record against the Mavericks.

vizoroo said...

By beating MSUM both games we knocked them off the TUC cliff so we lose our previous 3 victories against a TUC. Something confusing like that

Twister said...

Wow, the Pios win by the skin of their teeth last night. Fitting that Zucker gets the game winner in OT--he's an awesome player.

As expected, Mankato was a very tough opponent and showed up to win, not just finish the season.

I'm not really sure what to expect next weekend. I could see DU winning two or losing two. With this young team and so many freshmen playing key roles, it's hard to predict what we'll see from game to game.

At what point will the WCHA stop using Anderson? Clearly he lacks the judgement, integrity and composure to be ref at this or perhaps any level. At least he's consistent, consistently awful!!! Why is he not accountable? Isn't there a review/grading system in place?

Anonymous said...

Agreed! Every coach, player and fan suffers when he refs.

Anonymous said...

TV listings for the week in today's Post show FSN carrying all of the Final Five games.

Twister said...

Completely agree on Anderson--he needs to find something else to do on the weekends, because reffing is not his forte. I don't think Sheppard is much better.

Anonymous said...

Actually, I think the video review system saved Denver's ass. Thank you WCHA for having it. It's the one thing that can over rule the Refs

Anonymous said...

@ anon 10:24

Yes, every rink has someone who submits a review of the refs to the league after every game and they get paid for this -- and have done it for at least 20-some years.

However, Todd Anderson is pretty close with Greg Shep, so TA is safe no matter what. Whoever the WCHA thinks is their top refs for the season gets the WCHA Championship Game -- it will include either TA or Derek Shep (not the one last night, that is Brad Shep).

Gotta love nepotism!

Anderson looks like the result of breeding Fireman Bill and a Chipmunk.

Aluuum said...

Most referee organizations ,high school, college, pro are political. The good old boy network is in play. Anderson is obviously in that circuit. I watched both games and focused on the penelty calls because I detest that guy. He didn't disappoint. In fact, he was worse,in these two games, then normal, and normal for him is pretty bad. We will see him again next year.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, there is absolutely no way TA would be in the league without being as tight with the Shep family as he is. To be honest, I know Todd Anderson and he actually is a nice guy, however that doesn't mean squat on the ice...

@2:16-Maybe you can do some sort of intervention?

As odd as this sounds, it is in best interests of DU for CC to win tonight simply for the fact that having MSU in the pairwise helps us quite a bit and they played CC 4 times this year. I have a feeling that depending on how the conference tournament shakes out they'll end up back in the pairwise simply because good teams in the WCHA will play each other and as a result it will lift the strength of schedule portion for all of the other teams. Also, tonight's LSSU-Notre Dame game is pretty big for DU as far as the pairwise goes, and every bubble team should be watching the ECAC scoreboard tonight because if the home teams all lose some bottom feeder team from the ECAC will take their auto-bid. It should be interesting to look at the Pairwise tonight after the dust settles.

Anderson's out for the season im guessing. Developed tennis elbow from keeeping that hand in the air the whole game. Video review kept du alive and away from his terrible calls.

With 3 goals called off over the weekend, I bet Minnesota State is not very happy with Mr. Anderson either.

That's a joke boy.
