Metro Trustees Back Down After Coombe Threat

Metropolitan State College of Denver trustees today voted to postpone plans to rename the school Denver State University.

The unanimous vote came in response to claims by the University of Denver that the switch could create confusion and muddy the private school's long-standing brand identity.

Legislation that would have allowed Metro and Mesa State in Grand Junction to change their names was to be introduced by Sen. Michael Johnston next week. The trustees have decided to delay that introduction until the 2012 legislative session [read entire article].

Now lets use some of this new found mojo and get our hockey coach a new ten year contract, Boone reinstated as official mascot, lower tuition for our great students and form the Super 6 or 8 conference.

Are you serious??? We'll see how this plays out, but I am surprised that things changed so quickly.

Metro is postponing the name change for a year and proposing some weak-assed legislation saying "Metro students and alumni are great."

I haven't seen that much backpedaling since the Iraqi Minister of Defense was defending Saddam during the invasion.

Pretty embarrassing for Metro State to have this fiasco splashed all over the front page of the Denver Post.

There are many well placed private, legal and political professionals spread thruout Colorado. They would not think kindly to this move and some probably already have expressed their concern. Poor planning by Metro. They should have anticipated this opposition.

By the way, Coombe has an uzi under that robe -- to be used only if all else failed.

Ok Coombe is on a roll. He should now restore Boone to his rightful place as DU's official mascot. If he does that, we can put him back on our Christmas card list.

Some of the correspondence between DU and Metro

Thanks for the heads up on the correspondence. You have to love the Freedom of Information Act as it pertains to public universities and colleges.

The former Speaker of the House is now a Trustee for Metro. They weren't going to use his influence because he just joined the board last month. Now that this will be pushed to 2012, it should have no problem passing legislation with him being a huge backer of the bill.

Metro can try to pass it and may do so, but DU has some deep pockets and will litigate this in the courts, and it will Metro them a ton of money in legal fees and distractions. DU also has its friends in the legislature, too.

I think Metro will find a different name rather than go through all that.

Coombe finally does something intelligent. Now if could just find a new wardrobe consultant.

Denver Post editorial questions the wisdom of Metro's name change.
