Terry Frei Wonders About Donovan Signing

by Terry Frei

"High-powered NCAA programs bill themselves as vehicles to reach the NHL and accept early signings as part of the process. But Matt Donovan would have been better off to play through his junior season at DU before signing. That's what Matt Carle, a more highly regarded defenseman at the time and the winner of the Hobey Baker Award, did before signing with San Jose in 2006 and jumping straight to the Sharks" [read entire article].

Another dunno about Dono piece. All of our previous comments were about Matt being right or wrong in "his" decision when,in reality,it's usually hockey dad and N.H.L. advisors who carry most of the load.

I guess we will see next fall how wise of a decision Donovan made. When Stastny signed after his sophomore season, I remember the consensus being that he made a huge mistake and would regret it. Well he obviously did not, so I will withhold judgement until next season on young Mr Donovan's decision. Good luck to him!

So - mind you, lets keep this straight - DG wonders what Mike Chambers wonders what Terry Frei wonders about Donovan going pro?
What boils my broccoli more than anything else, is how my life sucks. Because blondie Matty Donovan - our beloved #4 DU penalty taker - is making more "dolla" at 20 years old (at best), than I do at age 47; or probably ever will. And ALL he does.... is play ice hockey. THAT'S IT. He doesn't deliver pizzas. He probably never had an asshole boss, a crap job and idiot co-workers. All this boy does is play stick and puck. Ugghhh... I'm sorry Mom.

1. Donovan is making about $65K in the AHL. If you are 47, and making less than $65K, you either picked a non-remunerative career path, or you likely aren't working hard enough.

2. Hockey careers average 4-6 years. Some can stick it out for 10-20 years, but most are washed up by age 30. Only about 10% of pro hockey players make NHL money for more than 3 years, and only .0001% of all hockey players make it to the NHL.

3. Moral of the story? Make what you can and get your degree,

4. He gets a signing bonus over the first three years that is more than his salary.

5. Make over $150K a year at age 20 and follow your dream OR go to school two more years and hopefully get a desk job for $40K a year at a job you don't really enjoy.

6. Not a hard choice for someone who has a dream of playing professional hockey.

BTW, my word verification for posting is "porkit" and that's exactly how I feel about the naysayers. You sound like a bunch of jealous teammates.

So...everytime I have seen a projected line chart, there is no mention of incoming frosh Dan Doremus...Am I missing something here?

Doremus was projected to arrive in 2012. There's been nothing put out by DU that he's arriving in 2011, but I've speculated from some time that DU would be crazy not to bring him in early.

Chambers Blog in 2010 saying he would arrive in 2012...

Just because Chambers writes it does not make it so. Doremus is almost 20 years old and Heisenberg lists him as coming this year. I never heard anything different and DU is short a forward for next season if he isn't coming and even recruited walkons are generally all set by now.

This site lists him as a 2011 recruit as well. In fact, the only places where he is listed as a '12 is in the Chambers blog and, uh, here...

Here's what happened. When Doremus announced he was coming to DU in March of 2010, Heisenberg listed his as either 2011 or 2012.

http://letsgodu.blogspot.com/2010/03/daniel-doremus-commits-to-du-in-2011.html

Then Chambers mentioned 2012, so we went with that.

Doremus didn't sign a Letter of Intent in December when Mayfield, LaLeggia, Allen & Larrazza were cited in a DU Press Release.

So we just went with 2012. Obviously he's really come on in the second half this season so they've bumped him up to 2011.
