A fire at the Ralph Engelstad Arena caused $1 million to $1.5 million worth of damage Sunday afternoon, according to the Grand Forks Fire Department.

The fire caused damage to the REA sound system, building and ice.

Firefighters believe a speaker somehow caught fire and fell to the ice.

The Grand Forks Fire Department responded shortly before 1 p.m. Sunday as smoke could be seen and fire alarms were activated.

UND police were first on the scene and discovered burning material on the upper catwalk.

All Grand Forks firefighters on duty, 14, responded to the call.

"It took probably three to four minutes by the time we got here to get hosed up to the catwalk from the stairwells," Grand Forks Fire Department Captain Bruce Weymier said.

That's too bad, really. That's the nicest college hockey arena there is. No Radio Shack Flea Market electronics equipment installed there, I guarantee you! Hopefully thier insurance premiums were paid in June. I recommend everyone go up there once in thier lifetime to experience hockey at the Ralph. It's quite surreal, seing this beautiful building, almost rising out of the frozen, barren landscape with gray, gloomy, overcast skies and bitter cold temperatures. Great hockey enviornment. They LOVE Denver visitors up there! Be sure to wear your DU Shirts that say Sioux Sucks on the back LOL

I heard someone threw a lawnmower out of their window and it landed up in the catwalk. Too bad TJ isn’t around anymore, he could have taken a piss and put the fire out right away.

1:34. I've been to North Dakota and had a great time. The REA is truly a splendid place. With that said, you're the reason why the rest of the country roots for the Red River against North Dakota

No mention of any possible injuries. It was a Sunday morning so most likely the building was empty. That's a blessing. Imagine if someone had been on the ice.

Fire is one of the calamities which cannot be controlled easily and can cause severe damages to property and lives.
