Notre Dame Telling Recruits "Super League"

Mario Lucia, the son of Gophers coach Don Lucia, is considering Colorado College, Minnesota and Notre Dame. According to the Star-Tribune, he said that Notre Dame is telling recruits the Irish are most likely going to the Super League.

Mario is currently attending the Minnesota Wild's prospect camp along with University of Denver forward Jason Zucker.

Obviously this is the news that DU fans were waiting for. Notre Dame gives the conference four strong private schools, with great academics.

The hockey resumes speak for themselves. All seven teams made the NCAA Tournament last season. Three of the teams made the Frozen Four.

DU & North Dakota lead the way with seven national championships and Minnesota-Duluth is the current NCAA champion. Miami, Notre Dame and North Dakota have been regular Frozen Four participants recently. DU has nine straight 20-win seasons.

The seven team format will allow for four extra non-conference games which will help the Pairwise Rankings considerably.

DG,

What am I missing? I count 3 private schools.

D.G. is counting Miami as a private school because it's academics, campus design and culture is more like a private school then a typical large public. Operationally he's right, technically he's wrong.

Nice catch.

I was certain that Miami University was private. I was wrong.

"Miami University is a coeducational public research university located in Oxford, Ohio.

Founded in 1809, it is the 10th oldest public university in the United States. In its 2011 edition, U.S. News & World Report ranked the university 79th overall, 34th among U.S. public universities, and ranked its commitment to undergraduate teaching 2nd among national universities, tied with Princeton University."

Miami is indeed an odd bird... If you've ever visited the campus, you'd swear it is private. However, it is indeed public. Regardless, it is a great institution with a great hockey program and a great coach.

I was in DC with DG in 2009 when they were just a few short minutes from their first national championship and have been several friends who are MU alums. Most people have also neem extremely impressed with how the team and the coach reacted follwoing Brendan Burke's tragic accident. they also have a shiny new barn and have invested heavily in their program.

It has always been fun to pull for them, and I look forward to the class and competition that they will bring to the new league. Truthfully, Notre Dame brings some great name recognition to the league, but I'm even happier to have MU on board.

This has certainly been an interesting time. While I'm disappointed that the WCHA as I've known it will only live for 2 more years, it's hard not to be excited about the new league.

A pretty good source indicated that the new name of the conference is National Collegiate Hockey Conference.

I saw Mario this weekend and gave him crap for this. I told him "Everyone's taking this as fact!" and he laughed.
