Denver Post: DU Announces Captains

(above) DU's 2011-12 captains are Dustin Jackson, Drew Shore, John Lee & Paul Phillips
Mike Chambers of the Denver Post has a short article about 5th-year senior Dustin Jackson and junior Drew Shore being named co-captains of the University of Denver hockey team. Senior defenseman John Lee and junior blue-liner Paul Phillips will serve as DU's alternate captains.

John Lee deserved to be a co-captain. he is a leader on and off the ice. Shore is a good choice too. Jackson is a 5th year who relized his chances of making the Pengiuns were not good and he took advantage of a medical red shirt, his time is past and Gwoz should have gone with Lee and Shore

per the rule book, the 'A' is alternate (not assistant)

As usual, the DU hockey experts show up in droves on this blog......."Nerd-alert"

Dusty Jackson was undrafted, so the Penguins' thing makes no sense.

Anon @8:30 is mostly correct. Not sure why it really matters, though.

Even though the terms Assistant and Alternate are used interchangably by pretty much everyone, the term in the rulebook is indeed alternate.

However the NCAA rulebook also only allows for the designation of one captain and one alternate, not 2 and 2. Further, the alternate cannot function as the Captain unless the Captain is removed from the game through injury, illness, or penalties.

Clearly, these four titles are honorary and the second "co-captain" will be the alternate. In the end, each game scoresheet will designate one as the captain (probably Jackson) and the other as the alternate. Perhaps Drew Shore is being groomed.

I'd say its Phillips that is being 'groomed'.

Drew Shore is already a captain and will likely be gone after this year.

You know what grinds my gears?

What grinds my gears is when alternate captains are referred to as assistant captains or alternative captains. Yeah.

Boone's Tavern opening in old Fagan's spot: http://blogs.westword.com/cafesociety/2011/09/buff_brothers_opening_boones_t.php

That's cool about Boone's Taven.

5 years ago, there were no real DU-themed bars other than perhaps Sidelines Pub in the student union (not a real bar due to limited hours), the Stadium Inn (more a relic than a true homage to DU sport) and the Campus Lounge, with a decent DU vibe but a bit far from campus.

Today, we now have The Pioneer, Crimson and Gold, and now Boone's Tavern, which shows how far school spirit has come when business people people want to invest in the brand alignment to DU.

Well good decision to have 2 C's. It seemed to work out well the last time becuase they won a NAtional Championship. Maybe it will work again to bring trophy #8 to Denver

You know what grinds my gears?

What grinds my gears is when people don't brush up on their DU history and forget the last time we had 2 C's was '05-06 (Carle and Gauthier)...we did NOT win the championship that year. Yeah.

10:52, I'm fairly certain 5:58 is a troll trying to impersonate a DU fan. There's a lot of them around here. Everyone knows the captain of the 04 team was Caldwell and 05 was Laatsch. Perhaps we had co-captains during the 50's and 60's that I'm not aware of.

Anonymous said...

So, you're saying 5:58 is Dubbie31?

Zing.

I edited "assistant" to "alternate."

Thanks for the heads up. :-)

While the Campus is owned by a former DU hockey player, the Mexican food is only so-so and they will only turn on DU away games upon request. It’s really geared to the surrounding neighborhood. Besides they usually cut off CO14ers before the third period.

It’s good to have more choices.

The Campus lounge is local joint. Very little connection to D.U. except the owner was a great D.U. hockey player.
The C and G,, Pioneer and now the Boone bar are better places to hit before a game.

Jordan's is another option.

Jordan's is very close to DU, but has very little DU related decoration inside. It's a generic Irish Pub. Kinda like the Border is a generic dive.

Jackson over Lee is a no-brainer. Lee is an average player at best and isn't exactly a firestarter out there.

Anonymous said...

Dude. What are you talking about? John Lee is one of the true leaders on the team and is always rallying the troops. You have no clue what you are talking about.

I'll never be able to eat another jelly donut without thinking about DG.

That’s a joke boy.

Lee rallying the troops?? Really?? Haven't seen that. Back up your claim with some evidence.

2:34. Do you have access to the locker room and non-public practices? If not, what you've seen or not seen is 1% of the total picture. If you do have this type of "inside access", obviously Gwoz, Miller, the rest of the coaching staff, and the entire hockey team see something that you do not. Lee wouldn't be an alternate captain if he didn't possess leadership qualities and deserve it.

Anonymous said...

No one is saying Lee doesn't deserve an A. But he sure as hell doesn't deserve to wear the C over Jackson. Go back and read the earlier comments.

2:34 is a dipshit.

Unlike you, obviously, I get more of a chance to see the interaction prior to the game, and before the start of periods that Lee has with his teammates. He is one of the rallying forces, firing the guys up, giving them all knuckles, pats on the back, etc...

There's a damn good reason he will wear an 'A' for the second straight season. And a damn good reason you are a dipshit.

My money says you are Mannino Saves, but you could be just another dipshit...I don't really know.

Dipshits who have not a clue and act like they do grind my gears.

I read the previous comments, I was responding to this "Lee rallying the troops?? Really?? Haven't seen that."

With no real insight, I agree that Jackson should be C simply because he has been in the program for 5 years and I think that should be rewarded and respected. I had hoped Ryder would get a C or an A for the same reason. Also, I think he plays with a certain edge to his game that I would have liked to see rewarded and made an example for the rest of the team to aspire to.

Obviously, there's a lot more that goes into the decision that I have no clue about.

Has our favorite waterboy returned? I love you man. You showed that douche real evidence of leadership! Knuckles to you bro!!!

Ryder for Captain! I like Drew Shore and Lee for choices..... I would of liked to see Ryder and Zucker in the mix. Yes Zucker as a sophmore probably wouldn't happen....

Anonymous said...

I agree! Ryder would have been a great choice for captain! And wow! you guys are rude to each other.

Anonymous said...

I just don't get where all this "Lee bashing" came from...I mean anyone has their right to choose who their favorite players are, however there needs to be respect for those who are chosen to wear a 'C' or an 'A'...because those guys are viewed by the coaching staff and their teammates as the deserving ones, as the ones who are looked up to.

Gwoz, Miller and the players deserve more respect for their decisions on who the leaders are than what has been shown by some. I mean, who are any of us to question who they view as the leaders. Of course there are going to be stronger captains and weaker captains from year to year, just as the team itself can be stronger or weaker from year to year. It is what it is and we should back them (and their choices) year-in and year-out...

Anonymous said...

In my opinion Ryder is not vocal enough, which is probably what cost him. His effort on the ice is definitely leader-esque however.

Anonymous said...

5:45....get off your high horse, turd. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. You may think Lee is the best of the bunch. That doesn't mean you're right. I think Lee is a good choice for the A, but Ryder could have been a good choice as well. This is a blog.....opinions are welcomed, last I checked. And unless you play for the team and/or have extremely strong insider knowledge, quit your bitching about the comments here.

I wasn't saying Lee should have been the 'C', however he is qualified. He appears to be well-respected through the interactions I personally witness. He is now going to be in a leadership position for a second season, which basically speaks for itself.

Yes, I am involved much more than any garden-variety fan.

What I took exception to was the "Lee...isn't exactly a firestarter out there" comment. The John Lee I personally have witnessed IS a "firestarter"; his attitude and enthusiasm impressed me and I thought it was exactly why he got the 'A' last year to replace Jesse Martin's 'A'. I just thought it was a really stupid comment to be made by someone who obviously does not know what is going on.

Hey when do season tickets available to get picked up? I'm getting antsy over here!

Anonymous said...

Don't season tickets get mailed to you?

i loved how at the final five a sioux fan yelled "hey Lee, you suck and so did your brother" i think the reason Lee came to DU was Brian did not have a great time at UND...
