DU Receives Commitment From Connor Honey

(above) DU's latest recruit, Connor Honey, helped Edmonton's South Side Athletic Club to the Mac's World Tournament title in the Calgary Saddledome on New Year's Day
Chris Hiesenberg's Website mentioned that right winger Connor Honey (6'0 175 lbs.) has given a verbal commitment to the University of Denver.  Connor is from Edmonton, Alberta and will play for the USHL Green Bay Gamblers this season under former DU assistant coach Derek Lalonde.

Playing last season for the South Side Athletic Club (AMHL), Honey recorded 24 goals and 32 assists in 34 games.  He led the Alberta Midget Hockey League in points (56) and game winning goals (5).

In December, Connor and his twin brother Curtis, helped South Side Athletic win the Mac's World Invitational AAA Midget Hockey Tournament, a prestigious international hockey tournament held annually for midget aged players in Calgary. The tournament featured 25 teams from across Canada, the United States and Europe. Curtis, a goaltender, was named tourney MVP, while Connor had two goals and 12 assists in seven games.  SSAC won the championship in the Scotia Bank Saddledome, home of the Calgary Flames, in front of 10,000 spectators.

Besides playing under head coach Derek Lalonde, Honey will be joined in Green Bay by future DU teammate Dakota Mermis, who played on the US Under-17 Development team last season.  Green Bay is loaded this season with three NHL Draft picks and 15 college bound players.

As Chris mentioned in the previous article, Connor Honey attended a tryout camp this summer with the WHL Seattle Thunderbirds. By all accounts the T-birds wanted him but he decided to go the NCAA route and play for Green Bay.

Playing alongside Connor and Curtis last season was Adam Tambellini, the youngest son of Edmonton Oilers GM Steve Tambellini. Adam's older brother Jeff played with DU alum Wade Dubielewicz on the NY Islanders when Dubie won the shootout and put the Isles in the playoffs.

Final Tidbit: How huge was winning the Mac Tournament? Past NHL legends that have played in the Tourney include Sidney Crosby, Rod Brind'Amour, Claude Lemieux, Pedter Zezel, Scott Mellanby, Mike Modano, Petr Nedved, Ryan Smith, Jarome Iginla, Dany Heatley, Patrick Eaves, Chris Osgood, Scott Gomez and Mike Green.

Good to see the Pios still keeping the Canadian talent pipeline pumping...

Fourteen DU recruits are going to be playing in the USHL this season. Its going to be a busy year keeping track of their exploits.

As we saw this season with Didier and Doremus, guys who play well in the USHL can get bumped up a year early if current DU players leave early for the pros.

"Over age"...Huh?...What do you mean?

I see only 2 Canadiens on our commitments and Zajac might be considered slightly "over age" but this Honey is not.

Anyone know how good of a goalie his brother is?

Curtis was MVP of the Mac's Tourney winning four of the seven games.

Unrelated - but thought ya'll would like to know. Tragedy in the Russian Hockey League. A Plane crash carrying the Lokomotiv hockey team to thier season opener in Bebarus. So sad.

dggoddard said...

Terrible news about the plane crash.

An especially tragic year for former NHL players as well as former DU player Corey Carlson and his family who perished in a plane crash as well.

The Lokomotiv roster included players and coaches from ten nations including head coach & long time NHL vet Brad McCrimmon from Canada.

Many planes used in that part of the world are anctrathertient by our standards. Also, their preventive maintainance proceedures are poor. These types of accidents are almost always preventable.

ancient

I thought you meant ancient as anthracite :-)

nah, I got the password mixed in there some how. But their maintainance standrds and proceedures are consistently poor. These accidents happen much too often

The No. 2 overall pick in the USHL Futures Draft has had people asking him where he’d go to college. Earlier in the week, he took a visit to North Dakota.

Guertler said he is keeping his options open but his top three choices are: Denver, Minnesota and North Dakota.

He plans on taking his time to make a decision. Guertler said earlier in the summer he’d hope to have a decision by now, but it won’t come until later once he has a chance to visit Denver.

Thanks for the update on Gabe Guertler. He's going to be playing for the USHL Fargo Force this season so UND will have a home field recruiting advantage.

But his hom etown is near Ft Lauderdale,FL. so Denver's weather & lifestyle could be a factor.

Coyotes acquire Cheverie from Florida
.By Sports Network
The Sports Network
The Phoenix Coyotes acquired goaltender Marc Cheverie from the Florida Panthers in exchange for center Justin Bernhardt Thursday.

Cheverie split time last year with the Cincinnati Cyclones of the East Coast Hockey League and the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League.

A seventh-round pick by the Panthers in the 2006 entry draft, Cheverie posted a 13-9-5 record with three shutouts and a 3.11 goals against average in 30 games with Cincinnati, and a 2-7-1 record with a 3.91 goals against average in 15 games with Rochester.

Bernhardt played in 47 games for the Los Angeles Wranglers of the ECHL last season, recording six goals and 25 points.

Daddy making you stay off the computer this afternoon, DG?

I think Gabe playing in Fargo this year will work against N. Dak. not for. One winter up there for a Florida kid should suffice. Denver beats Fargo and Minnesota easily. He's ours!

Guertler has major ties to Minnesota. His father grew up in the St. Paul and some of his family attended the University of Minnesota. If any place has home field advantage, it is going to be Minnesota. Not North Dakota.

Keep in mind, Guertler has ties to Minnesota. His dad is from there and is a Gopher fan.
