Boston University Defeats Denver 4-3

(above) DU's Jason Zucker was foiled by BU's goaltender

The University of Denver hockey team fell behind Boston University 1-0 on Saturday night after one period. But it was a disastrous second period that cost them the game.

Two of BU's early second period goals were shorthanded on the same power play.

Luke "Goal Czar" Salazar started a belated DU comeback in the third period. John Lee followed that up with a goal from the blueline to cut the lead in half.

Drew Shore pulled the Pioneers within one with two and half minutes left after Gwozdecky pulled Adam Murray to skate 6 on 5. DU continued to pressure the BU goalie but couldn't get the tying goal in. A controversial holding call against Beau Bennett with 28 seconds to play sealed DU's fate.

The clowns at UAA win a couple games and their blogger comes here to talk smack. What a tool.

Glad to see DU fight back last night and make it a game. The first two periods were ugly. All in all, a strong weekend for the Pios and a good start to the season.

The Denver Post is running a 3-part series on Jesse Martin, starting today. Very interesting stuff.

If I had to pick which game to lose, the BU game woulda been it. If DU wold have had that kind of outcome against the Eagles, in game 1.... holy cripes, that woulda been an ugly start to the year. But, we made uscho.com headlines and "shocked" the east coast college hockey world on national tv with a convincing win. That showed alot of character in my opinion. I'm happy. I'll be happier a week from today, when Mankato leaves Colorado with back to back losses

All in all, a very good weekend for Denver. Friday's game was a high value win against a top team in a playoff environment. Saturday showed some flatness and sloppy play, essentially handing the game to an opportunistic BU team, despite a character comeback that was just short

Denver Is a good 5 on 5 team, but the poweplay has been totally ineffective offensively, and a liability defensively. If you give up two SHGs in a game as DU did vs BU, you will lose 95 percent of those games.

Murray played well on Friday, but he needed to make ba big save after his puck handling blunder vs BU but he wasn't able to step up and keep the game close when he needed to, and the hole was just too large..

I think the big takeaway I saw from this weekend is that all of the DU freshmen can play the game at a high enough level to contribute this year. No one looked out of place, even on the road against what was the nation's top ranked team.
