(above) Catwalk view of DU-UMD game |
The University of Denver twice held two goals leads over Minnesota-Duluth on Friday night in Magness Arena, but couldn't pull out a victory. The game ended in a 3-3 tie with DU holding on for dear life in overtime.
Nick Shore led the way for DU with three assists. DU goals were scored by Jarrod Mermis, Chris Knowlton and Daniel Doremus.

That game deserved a tie. Watching it, you'd never think that the teams came up with as many shots as they did. It was an exhausting game, even as a spectator.
Pios looked good in the first 30-35 minutes, but after that point it was mostly UMD.
DU could not get a PPG on 5 tries and UMD got two PPGs and that was the real reason for the tie.
DU seemed more tired as the game wore on, and took dumb penalties - almost like they were playing not to lose.
It was a tie that felt like a loss, They really missed Bennett again. And no live Boone. At least Mege Boone showed up.
Hope for a 60 minute effort tommorrow
Time for Shore and Zucker to start scoring again.
Frustrating game tonight at Magness. DU had the great start and 2 two-goal leads during the course of the game but couldn't put the game away. Duluth certainly looked liked the fresher and more energetic team late in the game. DU couldn't seem to sustain much effective offensive pressure, and I thought they gave Duluth's forwards way too much room to skate. Duluth has some really good players who were given lots of space to make things happen. DU needs a better forecheck tomorrow and needs to find more energy late in the game.
That was a hard game to watch. DU seemed really out of gas on home ice late in the game. These guys haven't out a 60 minute effort since the BC game, and they need to be better than that at home. They got up 3-1 and got lazy. DU can't give up 42 shots and expect/ victory.
Two of UMD's three goals tonight were due to DU;s backside coverage breakdowns with Bulldogs getting wide open looks. They have to clean that up.
Top line is not acting like it. Nearly nonexistent tonight. Zucker spent too much time looking to pick a fight. UMD had him off his game, just the way they like it. UMD's goalie made some awesome saves in the second to keep them in the game. DU looked gassed last 30 minutes, UMD just kept getting stronger. Zamboni drivers this year suck.
DU started well, DU ended poorly...
Too many STUPID penalties, no energy late in the game.
DU had a bad PP and an even worse PK.
Don't know what to say.
DU needs to go with the old USSR system. Call it the "Soviet Solution."
When Bennett gets back, shelve the 7 Dmen lineup. Implement a "pitching rotation" and sit each blueliner every 7th game.
Then have Drew Shore anchor the 1st line, Beau Bennett the 2nd line, Nick Shore the 3rd line & Zucker the 4th line. Roll all four lines equally all game long and wear down the opponents. Create massive mismatch problems.
BTW, props to UMD's power play unit. It is an absolute treat to watch them rotate around while cycling the puck.
DU had a lead for 55 minutes tonight and couldn't seal it on home ice...
Was Boone there? The UMD mascot was! I don't know - I thought the eam would be more than ready to play Duluth after last week. Then we see a Friday flameout??? The leaders need to be leaders... starting with the coaching staff and the Captains. IMHO, I think the coaches need a kick in the pants, myself
The UMD mascot was not there, but there was a dude in a squirrel suit carrying an acorn.
Boone should have showed up...
UMD's power play runs the way a good PP should--crisp passing, player movement, and guys working hard down low. You don't see many guys standing around on their PP. DU could learn a lesson or two from that.
It was reassuring seeing the DU goalie have a relatively good game. He made some great plays. Kind of makes me wonder if they'd change the plans and play him tonight as well.
It could have just been a guy with a huge head and smile but I gave a high five last night to guy that looked a lot like Boone.
(I really need to stop drinking if it wasn't actually Boone.)
