Forward Cody DePourcq [5'5 150 lbs] of the Penticton Vees announced this week that he will attend the University of Denver.  Projected to become an elite college center, DU won a three-way recruiting battle against North Dakota and Minnesota. Currently a Junior in high school he will join DU in the 2013-14 season.

DePourcq, 16, joins Beau Bennett and Joey Laleggia as recent Vees alums who suited up for the Pioneers.

The Penticton native is in his first season with the Vees, recording three goals and 11 points in 23 games. Last season DePourcq recorded 23 goals and 47 points with the Okanagan Hockey Academy Midget team.

“The Pioneers are getting one of the most courageous players I’ve ever coached. I have had the pleasure of being involved with the development of Cody Depourcq over the past few seasons. Cody started as an AP player in his 15 year old season and is now contributing to our strong start as one of the most exciting 16 year old players in the BCHL.” Commented Head Coach & GM Fred Harbinson

Cody’s connections run deep with DU; his father John, spent four years with the Penticton Knights in the mid 80’s, including winning a National Championship in 1986.  Three of John's teammates went on to play at the University of Denver; Dave Shields, Rod Summers and Marc Rousseau.

The 5’5 forward plays well above his stature, playing in a prominent role, and is developing a quick reputation as one of the hardest working forwards in the BCHL.

Cody is currently a teammate of Mario Lucia the son of Minnesota head coach Don Lucia.  He was also pursued by the WHL Kamloops Blazers.

I'm sure (as with all our recruits) that he is a gentleman and a scholar, on top of being a great player. Coach Gwozdecky runs a first-rate program and only brings in the best.

Nice win by DU in the recruiting battle for this kid! He sounds a little like Zucker...we can only hope so. In any case, welcome to DU--can't wait to see him play.

I remember Cody's dad, John, playing for Ferris State in the late 80s - good forward.

Nice to see DU mixing it up with UND and Minnesota and getting the guys they wanted.

A long line of Penticton guys have suited up in Crimson and Gold, Brett Hull notwithstanding...

That's great!!! That means DG and Old Pio and HATE on him in a few years!!! I can't wait...

You can pronounce it any way you want as long as he's not from North Dakota--where men are men and sheep are nervous.

I don't think any DU fan here "hates" any of the DU players at all. Old Pio and DG are great DU fans, and if they, or other DU fans, criticize another DU player here, it's not out of hate - it's out of hope for improvement.

Fan criticism of players should be expected at this level as a revenue sport. It's not high school or junior anymore.

Fans pay good money to keep the hockey program going, and our opinions are part of the overall experience.

What is really hateful are those who seek to silence those who have differing opinions.

Naturally I'm pleased we got a committment from Cody. For some reason, I flashed on "Johnny Mac and the Bookends."

Johnny Mac(Millan) and the Bookends! Have't heard that for a while....Tom Weiss and Dave Hanson were the bookends. Damn good second line on the '86 WCHA Champs.

Dallas Gaume, Dwight Mathiasen and Kermit Ecklebarger was the top line....
