The University of Denver basketball team continued its amazing season with a convincing win over the University of Wyomingt 57-46 on Monday night in Magness Arena. With another quality win. DU moved up to #23 in the NCAA's "unofficial" RPI rankings.

Denver's 9-2 record is DU's best NCAA Division I mark since opening 11-2 in 1942-43.

The Cowboys (11-2) tied the Pioneers (9-2) at 32-32 with nine minutes left in the contest when DU clamped down defensively. The Pioneers held the Cowboys to just four free throws over the next six minutes to craft a 14-4 run. The Denver spurt was capped by two-straight threes and put DU firmly in control, 46-36, with 3:04 left. UW would hit just two more buckets the rest of the game.

"I have to give their defense credit." Wyoming coach Larry Shyatt said. "They forced us to take contested threes all game. I really feel the difference in the game was they were getting open threes and we were not. Their three point defense is better than ours and it really showed when we couldn't get an open look at three."

I'll have to see if I can get someone in the office to bet on the outcome!

I was there. Wyoming was bigger and stronger, but DU more skilled and smarter.

DU looked very good in the second half. When Wyoming started to get close with about 7 minutes left, DU totally daggered them with some 3-balls to put the game out of reach.

Wyoming was 1-13 on 3 point shots. DU was 45%. That wsa the difference.

I wouldn't call the result "shocking." Frankly, I wouldn't even call it surprising. I think that DU was favored to win. They've been playing very well, and they should be favored to win most of the games on their remaining schedule, too. (Unless there are some Sun Belt superstar teams that I'm not aware of.)

Hey, DG, check out this quote from the Laramie Boomerang newspaper. Washington from UW blames the loss on Denver's "awkward gym." Ha ha.

"In UW’s last four games at Magness Arena against Denver it’s a combined 5 for 38 from 3-point range.

In an 80-77 loss here in 2009 the Cowboys were 0 of 3 in an 80-77 loss, In 2007 they were 2 of 14 in a 76-65 setback and in January of 2006 they were 2 of 8 in a 69-64 loss.

Is there something about that arena for UW?

“I’m not going to blame it on the rims, but it is a pretty awkward gym,” Washington said.
