Alabama-Huntsville 3 - DU 2 FINAL

The University of Denver jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the first period on Friday night at Magness Arena.  But the University of Alabama-Huntsville would have the last laugh as the Chargers came from behind to pull out a 3-2 upset.

Ty Loney and Shawn Ostrow scored for DU.

UAH must not have read the pre-game press releases about how overmatched they were. No excuses for this one. DU looked awful, UAH played as hard as they know how.

Ditto to what old pio said. At tournament time if we are even close enough to be on the bubble this loss will cost us big time!

Brutal loss for DU tonight. There's no other way to describe this one. DU had the early lead but then coasted along and didn't put the game away. Lots of guys were out there putting in time and not putting forth enough effort.

Give credit to UAH--those guys played really hard and made the most of their opportunities.

Have to wonder what the mindset is of this Pioneer team. There are still 15 regular season games left, but the reality is this team has been treading water for weeks. Someone needs to step up and show these guys what it takes to win on a consistent basis.

Lazy hockey and blind passes are a bad combination.

Tomorrow night might very well determine the season. Tonight may have determined the season. Going into BSU and UAA, we need to save face tomorrow. We don't step up to play lesser-named opponents very well. It's a classic move for this team to follow up a great weekend with a crappy, uninspired loss.

I think tomorrow night sets the tone for UAA and BSU, and CC will set the tone for the end of the season. I'm actually glad we have a stacked schedule at the end of the year- no excuses for not being excited or prepared to play any of those teams. If good things are going to happen, we need the challenge against tough rivals. If not, doesn't matter if we get our butts kicked anyway. We're either going to come out of that 10 game stretch with 7-8 wins, or 7-8 losses, I think.

But points are points, no matter where they come from, and we desperately need them over the next few weeks.

On the bright side, it was nice to see Adam Murray with his equipment on.

Yeah, Twister. That someone's name is Gwozdecky, and he ain't getting the job done this year. He seems powerless in these types of games to fire up the troops and change the tide of the game. Injuries, blah blah. You don't lose to a 1-22 team on home ice. Ever.

What happened to the team that played Union and Air Force last weekend? Cuz they weren't at Magness last night.

So let me get this straight.....DU desperately needs wins....the season is over halfway done......little margin for error.....and DU loses on home ice to a team that had previously won one game??!! Embarassing.

I hope last nights game acts as a catalyst for the rest of the season. You can't overlook any single team in Div-1 hockey. I don't think the season is through, I just think the team needs to take away some positives, if nothing else, from last nights disturbing loss. DU needs to focus on one game at a time from here on out. Players getting healthy, and staying healthy wouldn't be so bad either...

Viz, it's not the first time something like this has happened- seems like it happens this way a couple times every season.

Congratulations to the Chargers. Hell of a way to celebrate the resurrection of their program. They earned the W by hanging in there.

This lose was the worst I've seen in 7 years of following the Pios. Down to 27th in the PWR. 180 from last weekend-right back to where we were in November/December. 0-5 on the PP against a 71% kill? I think this team might come off the rails now-March. Johnie Lee coughing up the puck was due to the fact that Gwoz overworked his 5 D men. Expect to see

...expect to see at least one forward play some D tonight.

The mental approach is so important. Even though it's a different game, I've mentioned before that in his 25 years as a head coach, Tom Osborne lost just one game to a team that finished below .500. In other words, for a quarter of a century, with only one exception, he always beat the teams he was supposed to beat. Consistency of effort is what kept his Nebraska teams in the hunt for the national title every single year. I wish I had some suggestions that would make us as consistent as those Cornhusker teams were, but I can say that consistency starts at the top.

Agreed...but we have been talking a lot all year about how this team doesn't seem to have strong student leadership. They were flat out lazy and not mentally prepared to play hockey last night. The end result was a brutal lose--have to say they deserved it. I wonder if 17 will leave early since the prospect of tourney birth just got much smaller.
