Denver Post: DU Peaking Near Post Season

The Goal Czar
by Mike Chambers

Hockey's back-door pass and open-net tap-in is considered the equivalent of an alley-oop dunk in basketball. Exciting stuff.

This year, the back door seems like the preferred route for the University of Denver hockey team, a highlight waiting to happen. The young and talented (and injury-prone) Pioneers (21-11-4) are accustomed to foundering in the NCAA Tournament as favorites, but if they qualify for the 16-team field this year, they probably won't be one of the top regional seeds [read entire article].

In recent seasons DU limped into the playoffs with uninspired play in the last few weeks of the regular season.

This season and in the two championship years DU made strong runs in the last five weeks of the regular season.

Certainly this season was the first time in a long time that the DU was far better in the second half of the season.

Call it "moxie."

I like how DU is finishing this season as well--winning games. 6-2 since the tie against CC. But Salazar's quote sums up the season well--ups and downs. Some great wins, some bad losses, and everything in between, including injuries and inconsistent effort. However, all that is thrown out the window as we get ready for postseason hockey.

Tough draw with the Badgers in the 1st round, but if DU plays hard, everything should take care of itself. If I remember correctly, DU played Sconnie in the WCHA 1st round 6 or 7 years ago. The Badgers came in here and won 2 close games and ended DU's season. Time to return the favor.

I don't think we're out of the woods yet - were partially peaking.

DU has had some good performances in recent weeks, but some bad ones too.

We had some really poor performances vs UND (game 1) and UW (game 2), and good ending on last Saturday to a UNO game that could have easily been a loss.

All in all, DU will need to be more consistent if they want to go deep in the post season. Another bad game could be a season-ender...

Good teams pull victories out of the fire, even when they play less than their best games. The 2nd games against UNO & Minnesota in recent weeks come to mind.

Earlier in the season DU came from three goals down to tie UNO, and pumped in three late goals against BU & UND in losing efforts.

The 2005 NC team laid an egg against Bemidji & UNH in the NCAA playoffs but still found a way to win.

that's what I was thinking but wasn't going to be the first to say it. Our favorite bottom Ron Mexico is drooling right now.

Zucker is still gripping the stick too tight, Gwoz should bench him.

The only place the Pioqueers will be peaking is at Cheesman Park. Better shine those golf clubs up, cause when Wisco beats your boys seasons done.
