USA Hockey made it official this week and named University of Denver recruit Jared Fiegl (Parker, CO 6'0 178 lbs.) as one of six players selected to the USA Hockey's National Team Development Program for the 2012-13 season.  The Colorado Rampage Website had announced this news back in October.

The five other players along with Fiegl, all from the 1996 birth year, will compete as members of the U.S. National Under-17 Team: Jack Eichel (North Chelmsford, MA) Dylan Larkin (U. of Michigan) and Ryan MacInnis (St. Louis, MO),  Ryan Bliss (Cornell) and Jack Glover (Golden Valley, MN).

"We are pleased to welcome this talented group to the NTDP," said Peter Ward, director of player personnel for the NTDP. "These players will provide a solid foundation for future signings and we will continue to find the top talent in the country as we fill out our roster."

During the 2011-12 season Fiegl competed for the Colorado Rampage Midget Minor team of the Tier I Elite League and recorded 22 points (11g-11a), which was third most on the squad. He also chipped in with one power-play tally and one game-winning goal.

Fiegl competed for Team USA in the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games from Jan. 13-22, 2012, in Innsbruck, Austria.

Another DU recruit, Dylan Gambrell, was also one of 40 players at the USNTDP Tryout Camp last week.

We'll have to see if he joins Jared on the team.

Think DU recruits 'em young?

Boston College already has three commitments for their 2015 recruiting class ['97 birth year]. The three players are currently Freshmen in high school.

You think that's bad, DG?

Major Junior coaches are ruthless, frequently unethical, recruiters that are not bound by the recruiting rules that govern NCAA institutions.

It is not unheard of for a Major Junior coach to show up at a kid's school or practice for days on end with gifts and clothing...which a 15 year old really doesn't know how to say "no" to. Other tactics are for a kid's family to get calls with offers of paid vacations and "free" leases on cars, or for a coach to target a kid's friends and teammates, trying to convince them that they "just want what's best for so-and-so".

Committing to an NCAA program early is one way to stem the Major Junior tide a bit, but it's not always successful. Hell, even after enrollment in college, a kid who was deemed to be "on the fence" between Major Junior and college will be frequently and aggressively targeted with promises of playing time, a stipend, and "other perks", in hopes of convincing him to leave school.

Though it may feel a little...unseemly to be recruiting kids as young as 14 or 15; unfortunately, when you're recruiting elite talent and competing against Major Junior, this is what you have to do.

Now that last Friday's game is in the books and our top scorers are on their way to greener pastures, we have to take a look at the incoming freshmen to see what kind of year we will have next season. Unfortunately, its not looking good. Gabe Levin, who I think signed a few weeks ago, is the highest scorer of all these young, soon-to-be Border regulars. Although he plays in a lower Junior A league in the NAHL, he has about 90 points this season. Taking a look at the other Blue Chip players, it looks bleak. I am sure that Gwoz would like to replace some of the goals that will be missed from the departing players' sticks and would probably like to add some more, but unless there are some serious reporting errors on hockeydb.com, we might not see the offensive production from this incoming class. Actually, to put it bluntly, I am a little discouraged by the numbers of these kids showing up to campus in the fall. It could an interesting rebuilding year indeed, but lets just hope that I'm wrong.

Would you ever consider converting a Dakota Mermis to forward?

Has there ever been a college Dman that became an excellent forward?

I believe Mullen & Viederman were forwards that became blueliners.

Dakota Mermis
Height: 5'10
Weight: 180
Shoots: Left
