DU Stuns Nebraska-Omaha In Overtime 3-2

(Above) The Goal Czar tied the game with 38 seconds remaining in regulation

Freshman Daniel Doremus scored the biggest goal of his career as the University of Denver came from behind to win on the road on Saturday night.

DU trailed the University of Nebraska-Omaha 2-1 with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.  UNO was called for a penalty.  The Pioneers went on the Power Play and with a minute remaining pulled goaltender Sam Brittain to attack the Mavericks 6 on 4.  The Goal Czar scored the game tying goal with 38 seconds remaining.

In Overtime, DU controlled the balance of play and it set up Daniel Doremus' heroic goal.  Jason Zucker fed Doremus who fired a wrist shot past the UNO goaltender to end the game.

Drew Shore scored DU's first goal of the game and Sam Brittain made 38 saves.

DU is #11 in the Pairwise Rankings and will face the University of Wisconsin next weekend in the WCHA Playoffs in Magness Arena.

what a beaut! Did anyone hear the announcers after the game? They sounded like a bunch of cry babies, something along the lines of "that's the worst officiating I've ever seen. DU got twice as many power plays as us and to call one with two minutes left. Unfair. And the guy scores the winning goal who's only had three goals all year". Classic.

It is always good to get a tough comeback win late in the year. The boys will have confidence that they are never out of a game.

A great series to end the year!

Amazing victory and great to see Danny Doremus be the hero.

Whats up with Belfour's kid. He's supposed to get the start for UNO and he oversleeps...

Jeez.

DU just got to stay in the tourney conversation.....

"Leave 'em whining," I always say. Terrific gut check win. I think Czar's goal ripped the heart out of 'em.

And as Vizoroo pointed out on the scoring thread: all the goals were scored by Colorado kids. Sweet.

Ya Pios!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Out played for 59 minutes and found a way to win. Excellent win. A lot of people will say that we "stole" that game. But that's a lame term. We won and came up big when it mattered.

That's awesome that the announcers were whining. According to the box score UNO had 9 penalties and DU 7. That's not really a huge difference or one sided refing.

Also, DU went 6-3-1 in the final 10 games against CC, Minn, Wisc, UND, and UNO. Absolutely brutal schedule to the end the season. Going 5 and 5 would have been expected. They really surpassed expectations and are playing their best hockey of the year at the right time.

The whole idea of having two power play lines is if one isn't working use the other one. When you give up a short handed goal because you can't give and effort out there you should be watching from the bench. I don't understand the bench management of this team sometimes.

DU was the better team for about 65 out of 125 minutes this weekend. They played well on Friday, subpar on Saturday, but had enough left in the tank to get a win they didn;t really deserve on Saturday.

This team has all the pieces to be successful, but the effort level is still pretty inconsistent.

I will take the sweep, though.

Just win, baby. That is all.

UAA is tied with Bemidji State 4-4 with 4 minutes remaining in the second period. A Bemidji loss or a tie would mean that BSU would play DU in the first round.

Clearly that would be much better than facing Wisconsin who has been rolling in the last six games.

Sweet victory!! Not pretty, but a huge win.

Bring on Bucky!

Bemidji defeats UAA 5-4 so DU will face Wisconsin in the first round of the WCHA plays.

Brutal.

Wisconsin is playing well right now.

I could see this playoff series going three games

If it goes three games and DU can get in the NCAA playoffs with a loss, I'd vote for throwing the third game.

Lets win it in two. Should get a huge Pairwise bump from two TUC victories.

We can't wait to go the final five and end your season.....you do not want to face us next weekend. Badger alumni will take over your arena!!! Can't wait go W!!

Hopefully Magness can withstand all the extra weight from the Wisconsin fans. I'm not seeing Wisconsin ending our season at all. I hope the Wisconsin fans enjoy their trip to St. Paul to watch DU, Minnesota, North Dakota and other good teams in the WCHA.

You won't end our season.

DU hasn't been swept by a WCHA team since 2008. We've beaten Wisconsin on the road this year, and the Pioneers will be ready for Bucky.

Gwoz has a great record vs UW.

Such a good weekend even old p can't bitch and whine.

Great job by Doremus to get the game winner, and end the regular season on a very high note. I see a lot of potential in him. It was also gratifying to see Luke Salazar have a good game. I think back to his first big Freshman goal against the Fighting Irish 4 years ago. What a hard worker he is!

crielsnattleThe only thing that matters is getting into the 16 team tournament. Going up to St. Paul and getting into top effort games and then returning on Sunday and flying out to some indian outpost like Worchester Mass. is counter productive. The Mac Naughton cup is the Mac Nothing cup as far as I'm concerned. Seeding in the tournament means squat.
The 04 team got it right by not going up to St.Paul and resting and practicing at Magness while the other ten teams beat their brains out up at St. Paul.

I don't think DU will make the NCAA tournament without getting to St. Paul. Autobid to the AHA that has no teams in the top 16 of PWR (guaranteed to have to be in top 15 of PWR then). And, I could definitely see the autobids for the WCHA and ECAC going to teams that aren't currently in the top 16. And obviously, there's the possibility that HE and CCHA will have the same. I'd say you need to be top 13 in the PWR to get in. Lose 2 out of 3 to Wisco and we could easily drop more than two spots.

And a couple slight corrections, that would be the BroAdmoor nothing, and 6 teams beating their brains out. (5 teams in 2004).

Yopu have a point Anon 11:34. That's why those early games that we gave away, like that Alabama Birmingham game as a prime example, could come back to haunt us. This years team is a riddle within a puzzle, top talent that sleep walks in some games.
I would love to see Bennet come back .I watched him early in the season and he changes the game.

Season Analysis:

This regular season was a B- for DU. Picked to win, DU had some great performances, but also struggled with injuries and inconsistent play, finishing 3rd.

Over Achievers: Juho Olkinoura, Joey LaLeggia, Chis Knowlton, Scott Mayfield, Nick Shore, Shawn Ostrow, Ty Loney,Drew Shore

As Expected: Jason Zucker, Sam Brittian, Luke Salazar, John Ryder, John Lee, Paul Phillips, Josiah Didier, Larkin Jacobson, Dan Doremus

Under Achievers: Adam Murray, Dusty Jackson, Zac Larrazza, Matt Tabrum, Dan Olszweksi, Nate Dewhurst, Jarrod Mermis

Too Injured: Beau Bennett, David Makowski

Based on his last 3 years, Dewhurst should be in the over-achiever category.

How about a round of applause for our new goaltending coach, David Lassonde? A product of the east coast college scene, came to the WCHA, no doubt expecting a cake job, considering he had a fabulous goalie in Sam Brittain ready & waiting for him in Colorado. Before the guy is finished unpacking in his new house, Brittain goes down, and he has Miller & Gwozdecky looking at him going, "OK, now what?"

I think he did a great job given the adverse start. Juho turned out to be a gem. Great job, everyone.

Zack Hope should definitely be in the over-achiever category. Probably my front runner for team MVP.

Interesting about Murray...Jussi's and Sam's stats are better, but guess who has by far the best record at 8-2-1?

Adam it is. Sam is 5-3-0 and Jussi is 8-6-3. That tell me that either (1) the team plays better in front of Adam and, at the end of the day, wins are the only thing that matters; or (2) Adam has played easier teams. Probably some combination of both.

My analysis concludes that DU needs to move their feet and control their gaps.

Good anlaysis skip, but you're missing one key component. They must skate! as well.
