NHL Penguins Players Don DU Jerseys At Practice

(above) The Pens wear DU practice jerseys

Yesterday the Pittsburgh Penguins practiced at Magness Arena to prepare for their upcoming game against the Avs on Saturday night at the Pepsi Center.

The team had a scrimmage and the college players wore DU practice jerseys while the Major Junior lads wore Penguins gear.

We were never close to landing Sidney Crosby....he left Shattock after his freshman year and starting playing for Rimouski at 16. Was drafted when he was 15 (Rimouski).

From the sound of the Pens interview with Beau, looks like he's being shelved for the remainder of the year...tough loss for the playoffs, but also sounds like he'll be back next season. Pens would be dumb to rush him.

No college team was close to landing Sidney Crosby.

Not DU. Not NoDak. Not Bucky. Not Minny. Not anyone.

He was good enough to play Major Junior TWO YEARS before he would have been eligible to play college.

He did take an unofficial visit it to North Dakota though. That has to count for something right?

All it usually takes is one trip to GF to convince most recruits that this is not the place to be!

Why does UND compete for the national title every year then? Watch the game on FCS tonight....you'll see a sold out arena (palace) against MANKATO. Trust me if DU was playing UNO tonight at Magness there would be a crimson out (empty seats). If your trying to compare the passion of the Ralph vs Magness...they aren't even in the same conversation. Your lucky DU has Gwoz...cause they sure don't have the support of the city / student body. GF = 55,000 in population and sells out an arena twice the size of Magness against MANKATO. Crosby visted UND, not DU. Suck it.

Teams in WCHA that have more student body support than DU: UND, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Duluth, Omaha, Bemidji, St. Cloud, Tech and yes....CC. I'll give you Mankato and AA.

9:40, you are wrong about CC having more student body support. They do have more support from the local community though.

9:33, nobody was comparing the passion of the Sioux fans to DU. I talked to several Sioux fans when they were here the other weekend. Talked about how great their overall fan support is compared to DU's. Every single one added the disclaimer "yeah, but there ain't shit to do in Grand Forks besides watch the Sioux".

And, you're shit talking to the wrong group. We are passionate about DU hockey. We do live and breath it. So what if we are comparitively small in numbers? In fact, that makes us better fans than you.

Suck it.

It's your student body that pisses me off. PWR aside, DU can beat anyone anywhere. If they make the tourney, they can won it all. As a college fan who wants to see the sport expand, it drives me nuts there isn't more support in CO!! Would love to DU's arena have the same feel as the Kohl Center, The Ralph, and Mariucci (sp?).

While DU competes with Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota on the ice, the other comparisons can't hold up. DU is a very small private school of 5K undergrads in a highly over-saturated sports market. All college sports here in Colorado struggle to fill arenas and stadiums vs all the 8 pro sports here and world class skiing here. DU won't ever have the kind of support you see at large public or flagship state universities - it's seen locally as too rich, too private, too small and has a majority of students from out of state, which doesn't help generate local affinity. It's hard to capture local fans' attention when DU hockey is on page 12-15 of the sports section here most of the time.
