Border Reopens As Merchants Mile High Saloon

For three decades The Border Restaurant & Bar had checkered history as DU's most notorious watering hole. A trio of new owners, two of whom run the well known dive bar Merchants Saloon [Air Hockey table, pool table, pinball, jukebox, stripper pole, dim lighting] in Oakland, California, took over the spot a few weeks ago and this week the space reopened as Merchants Mile High Saloon.
Two Border Incidents That Impacted DU Athletics

An infamous incident at the Border in 2008 led to the eventual firing of DU lacrosse coach Jamie Munro and charges being filed against two of his players. A 23-year-old female, who happened to be a DU alum, were allegedly attacked by a group of lacrosse players while they were leaving the Border.

DU ice hockey goaltender Chris Burns was stabbed during a wild 75 person melee back in 1994. Naturally it was business as usual the next night and another fight broke out. Burns finished his career with a 4.72 GAA and and .842 Save Percentage.

Wait, wait ... wait... new owners from OAKLAND?

Place better not become a Raiders bar; that's more disgraceful than the DJ there calling curfew for all the Cherry Creek HS kids at 11:30 back in circa 2002 Border.

Share your classy "The Border" memories, well .. what you can remember of it anyway. ;)

Nothing good ever comes out of a place with the word "saloon" in it.

"Merchant's Mile High Saloon" sounds like the worst name ever for a bar. Who are they catering to? Name doesn't attract students, doesn't attract alums. The name is more appropriate for a shitty bar in Aurora. Let's hope they actual bar is better than the name. Who the F cares about a connection to a bar in freaking Oakland, anyway?

Man, I spent a lot of money in there to make the old owner, "Johnny" rich in the 1980s.

I can remember the first dance floor in there, too.

They would serve anyone on the far side of seven years old.

DG is going to work the pole when he comes back to town for the Tech game. What does he wear under that toga anyway? Visit the Merchants Mile High Saloon to find out.

Word is out that they needed a high-loader to get the puke out of the men's room.
