Youngest Carle Brother Commits To Merrimack

Defenseman Alex Carle, the youngest of the three Carle brothers from Anchorage, committed to Merrimack College last week.

Carle, 18, is the captain at Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire. He'll begin at Merrimack of Hockey East in 2014. Likely he'll play a season in the USHL before college.

Matt Carle, the oldest brother, was one of the best players ever to play at the University of Denver winning two national championships and the Hobey Baker Award.  Matt currently plays for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Second brother David Carle retired from hockey just before arriving at DU after being diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a thickening of the heart that can trigger cardiac arrest during strenuous activity. He coached at DU for four years as a student assistant coach.  Today, David is an assistant coach with the USHL Green Bay Gamblers.

2014 DU recruit Cody DePourcq of the BCHL Pencticton Vees has been on fire the past two weeks with five goals in the past four games.

Cody only had five goals in his first 38 games this season.

As one of the younger players in the BCHL, looks like he's rounding into form.

His father played for Ferris State back in the '80s.

Can you find out if DU went after Carle? Seemed almost like the Shore situation to where like all he had to do was say I wanna play at Denver, and he'd be on the team. Merrimack? Really.

Now this news is a shocker? I assumed he would play for DU; but then again, we all know about assume...

Guessing that Alex's decision is in the best interests of both parties. Not sure how high the interest was on either side to bring him to DU.

DU has a logjam on the blueline that will continue into the forseeable future.

Matt & David played for the USNDP and Alex instead chose to play at Prep School back east.

Alex was considered to be the top uncommitted high school hockey player in the country, but incoming DU recruits Butcher, Ausmus & VanVoohis are well ahead of Alex at this point in their development.

Certainly wish the best for Alex and hopefully DU can lure Merrimack out for Colorado later in the decade.

Was hoping to see Carle III in crimson and gold, but...

Good Luck to Alex!
