NCAA Tournament: DU 12 - North Carolina 11

(above) Joy in Indianapolis

The University of Denver lacrosse team fell behind 6-0, gave up an empty net goal on a botched substitution and hit five posts, all in the first quarter, before regaining their composure and pulling off a stunning comeback at the NCAA Quarterfinals in Indianapolis.

The winning goal by Eric Law came with just 13 seconds remaining and was the first time DU led in the game.

What a game! UNC was wasted in the second half. No quit with these guys. Congratulations to the boys.

WOW, what a comeback by DU. They only led the game for the last 13 seconds.

One of the best displays of pure heart and willpower by a DU team that I've ever seen in 35 years of watching Pioneer sports. Fricking amazing!

I couldn't watch the first half, 6-1 was too painful. But I made it back . Great Comeback by the Pios!

Boone's last stand? Philly, home of the Pioneers who started our nation!

Boone was a huge presence in Baltimore two years ago and DU had a great crowd. This is not the end. Like Bluto said, "it's not over until we say it is."

This was an epic win. Carolina was the top ranked team in the country, and they were playing red hot down the stretch. They should have been the top seed, but weren't, due to some early season stumbles.

DU got down early, but showed an amazing amount of heart to come back and win that game.

That's a huge confidence booster for the Pios as they face top seeded Syracuse next weekend in Philadelphia. SU will have a big crowd advantage there, but hopefully the Pios will get out to a better start. DU is coming together and has good leadership and coaching.

I see this final four as wide open. Any of Syracuse, Cornell, Duke and DU could win it.

I plan on bringing Millburn Deli Sloppy Joes to the tailgate party

Wow, thank you Pios ... if they couldn't hold you down at 6-0, no one can stop you. I FEEL a championship. Go DU, Go Boone! (and nice Animal House reference, Tim89!)

LONDON...

We don't get to see THE GAME over here till early this morning...

Well done TEAM... ( 'a team with a heart as big as the Rockies', someone wrote me)

News travels fast: I've already had offers for bets from Duke and Cornell friends.

Lets not overlook the small matter that No 1 ranked Syracuse stands in our way next weekend..

WELL DONE

NCAA lacrosse does not get big TV ratings but the final four should attract a lot of DU alumni, including some who are totally unaware of the current mascot saga. Some great footage of Boone in action, paired with some incredulous comments by the announcers about his potential demise at the hands of a jackalope, elk or mountaineer, might stir up some more alumni feedback.

Just requires giving the announcers a handy briefing on the subject as a possible topic for conversation during game breaks.

Yes, because what's really important amongst all this, is Boone.

Nice to see Coombe make a appearance on this site.

Funny comment in the Denver Post by Tierney after falling behind 6-0...

"We could have fired the coach at that point, although my boss probably would have waited until after the game for that. So the difference is you throw them a changeup."

Firing Gwozdecky has gotten the attention of the DU coaches. DO NOT LOSE NCAA TOURNEMENT GAMES.

DG: You know the Tierney quote scares me. I hope he has not soured on DU.

I saw the quote too. If he wins it all, I would expect him to exit in a blaze of glory. His goal was to establish a foothold in the West for lacross and he has done that.

However, this quote might indicate he may go either way. Count each year as a plus with Tierney...and Matt Brown is a very able replacement to ensure continuity.

Timt89- I live in Bedminster. When coach T named Matt Brown as his successor about 1.5 years ago, coach T stated that he had no plans to retire soon. It was important to give Brownie the job for he is the hottes asst. coach in the country.
