Dakota looks like fitting in on team in Canada ... from his tweets looks like Jarrod still taking classes at DU, but don't know what happened other than "leave of absence" .. academics?
I don't think Jarrod's issue was academics as he was recognized as one of DU's 14 All-WCHA Academic honorees last spring (GPAs of 3.0 or better). DU also had 4 All-WCHA Academic honorees with GPAs of 3.5 or better. Freshmen are not eligible for this honor.
The roster does not include Matt Marcinew who committed to DU after July 31st when this roster was put together.
I would suspect that its a personal issue which could be something that is none of our business...which could be as simple as something like he just lost interest in hockey.
I always assumed Mermis was in the Gwoz doghouse, but that doesn't seem to be the case since he's not on Monty's roster either.
I think I recognize 3 or 4 of those guys on the roster from last year. j/k, but wow, we have a lot of new faces. Gonna need to study like I'm back in college memorizing all these new names before the first preseason game.
I see Wade Bennett on the roster - is he healthy? I heard he had to retire from hockey with injuries, so it would be great if he is able to play again.
WBennett would have received a redshirt his freshman year and quite possibly have received a medical exemption last year. So, I can see how he could have 4 years of eligibility. I suppose he could do
Between Jarrod Mermis, Wade Bennett and Justin Jones, these older brother scholies to entice younger brothers have all worked out very well. Between all 3 younger brothers, we've received a total of about 2 years of playing time (about half season for Dakota and a generous season and a half for Beau).
I say that half joking. Really liked Jarrod when he played and excited to see Wade join the team again. It's really great to see him returning to hockey and I wish him a great season.
After eight years, 1.5 million visits, 5755 posts, 32,596 reader comments and countless laughs; LetsGoDU is ceasing operations today. LetsGoDU averaged 30 visits a day in 2005 to almost a thousand visits per day in recent years and its been a wonderful journey. We launched a mascot, built school spirit to unprecedented heights, covered many epic victories and more than a few heartbreaking DU losses. To those who supported DU through this Blog [du78 & many others] and helped PioNation fight the good fight, we say thank you. To the many DU students who shared our vision and supported school spirit and Boone, you helped change the culture at the University of Denver for the better. Like Boone, LetsGoDU is leaving on top.....???????????
Looks like your narcissistic personality disorder is rearing its ugly head again.
Sure, we all got screwed in the Gwoz debacle but Denver shouldn't finish dead last in the NCHC this year. CC still sucks. Come on we can’t be that bad.
IF DU can‘t win the gold pan this year, I’ll jump on the bandwagon to FIRE THE DOPpES!
I don't see DU holding onto the Gold Pan. CC has an established program and DU ..... let's just say it's a new beginning. I'm thinking that DU won't win more than a handful of games this season.
DU will not be terrible, but it is a rebuilding year. They are probably a .500 club, and anything over that is a bonus with a new coach coming in. They likely won't make the NCAAs this year, but they will provide some excitement.
There is an established and proven goalie returning in Sam Brittain. When he is on his game, he's a quality netminder who can keep DU in close games. Cowley should be ready to be his backup. I'm not worried about goaltending.
DU has a very good, mobile defensive corps returning with 4 very established D-men (Laleggia, Makowski, Zajac and Didier) leading the way and an excellent, highly sought-after recruit coming in there in Will Butcher. The d-corps may lack size, but they will be skilled and will contribute to the offensive attack. The only concern here is depth after the top 5, who are suspect. I have no idea if Van Voorhis, Neville or Bennett can play at this level, but they are undersized and there is concern here. Those top 5 guys are going to need to stay healthy.
Up front, there is a solid top 5-6 returning. Quentin Shore is going to be an elite player to build around. Larraza, Loney, Doremus and Tabrum are all proven players at this level and will have good numbers with all the ice time they will get. After that, DU is unproven. If Levin, Arnold and Jacobson develop into serious college players this year, DU will be able to compete with most of the teams they will face. The freshmen are all unknowns. We can hope that of Moore, Hawkinson, Romig and Marcinew, that one or two of them can contribute right away.
DU will not be high-powered, but if the defense supports the offense and Brittian plays well, DU will be a team that will give its fans some fun moments as Monty begins his career.
Good post 9:17. Although, I'm a bit more concerned about the D-men being undersized than you are. Not just the size of them (e.g. Ryder was never that big), but the style of play. With the possible exception of incoming freshmen, Didier is our only guy that has a real physical edge to his game. He's going to see a lot of playing time this year. At this point, I'd rank his as our most important skater on the team.
I think Joey, Ty and Makowski will all have an opportunity in the spotlight this year. Time for them to make a highlight reel a la Nick Shore. That being said, I think this team has a very good shot at mediocrity. Can’t really fault Monty but I really hope this isn’t an opportunity for the administration to say that since hockey is shabby come on over to watch basketball.
There is nothing wrong with DU trying to be good at every sport they sponsor. DU fans should support the school in all that they have time for - it's not hockey against basketball!
I think it will take Monty some time to get the hockey program to a higher competitive level - probably 3-5 years.
From what I am hearing, Monty has a different philosophy than Gwoz in recruiting. You won't see as many blue chipper/NHL bound highly drafted recruits at DU - you will see hard-working, relentless, gritty players who stay all four years, develop chemistry and who play as a team.
I'm pretty sure Gwozdecky mostly recruited "hard-working, relentless, gritty players who stayed all four years & developed chemistry" until DU won the NC's in '04 & '05.
It remains to be seen if the ticket buying public will embrace Monty's recruiting tactics if he doesn't win right off the bat.
DU fans have been spoiled for over a decade. 20 win seasons, annual NCAA trips, star recruits who go on to the NHL.
And the real elephant in the room; Easy access to Avs tickets, the Cutthroats, and massive competition for the Denver sports dollar.
Does DU have a shot at beating Air Force this year? If Jimmy is building a team to outwork the other teams rather than one based on raw talent, that’s the Air Force model. I don’t see DU outworking Air force.
If Monty’s team can only muster a couple of wins a season, how long will it take the administration to fire him? Will they try to scrap the hockey program in favor of basketball? Before Joe Scott heads to greener pastures? When will they FIRE THE DOPpES?
I think this team will be just fine. I am disappointed in thier schedule though. I was hoping to play some CCHA teams or a legacy WCHA team, or maybe UM, or PSU, to maybe rub it in a little. But, I also think in a year or two, when all the hatred around the realignment goes away, that there will be better scheduling with all D1 teams, and hopefully alot of noncon matchups that we really haven't seen in a long time. I would LOVE to play the Wolverines in a regular season series.....and especially PSU, which got all this started. My sleeper pick is Doremus. Watch for a big change with him.
DENVER - The University of Denver hockey team will hold an open tryout for all interested students on Monday, September 23 at 2:30 p.m.
All interested players should contact DU Director of Hockey Operations David Tenzer at 303-871-4597 prior to Friday, Sept. 13 to secure a spot on the tryout roster.

So The Mermis is gone. Does anyone know the story behind his departure?

I see two Fr. goalies. I only knew of that one 18 yr. old. Is the other a walk on?
Any word on captains?
There are no highly drafted players on this roster, so it will be cool to see how many of them stay with the program.
Ogard is the recruited frosh walk-on goalie. Cowley is the scholie frosh goalie. No word on captains yet.
Marcinew now on DU roster http://www.denverpioneers.com/SportSelect.dbml?&DB_OEM_ID=18600&SPID=10862&SPSID=90196
I see Wade Bennett on the roster - is he healthy? I heard he had to retire from hockey with injuries, so it would be great if he is able to play again.
Wade is making a comeback. Don't know why he is listed as a frosh when he is a junior at school. He could have 4 years of eligibility left, maybe???
WBennett would have received a redshirt his freshman year and quite possibly have received a medical exemption last year. So, I can see how he could have 4 years of eligibility. I suppose he could do
I can't recall wade's skill set. Was he a standout recruit, normal recruit, borderline recruit?
Wade was a throw in to get his more talented brother, first rounder Beau. Wade is a depth player at best.
Between Jarrod Mermis, Wade Bennett and Justin Jones, these older brother scholies to entice younger brothers have all worked out very well. You guys are so f##ked...
It's going to be fun watching you bring up the rear in your first season in the NCHC.

We will win more than we lose. Like the guy who sells suits on T.V. "I guarantee it"
Funny, that guy who sells suits on TV was just fired (by the company he founded) just like Gwoz.

Its going to be tough.
Looks like student season tickets have been cut from $50 to $20, according to the DU ticket web site. That's less than a buck per game.
Student ticket campout is on October 4th this year. Brrr.

USA Today projects DU Hoops as the #51 seed in the country, and predicts DU to make the NCAA March Madness Tournament as a #12 seed.
Basketball rules/hockey drools!

Michigan has not faced DU in regular season play since 1980.
I think DU has played Mich maybe twice since UM left the WCHA.
Good to see Coach Monty out skating with the incoming freshman today.
