Volleyball - Win Leaves Victors Seeing Yellow

With three wins to take the Denver Cup this weekend, the young women's DU volleyball program with only one senior celebrated another tournament championship. With a sterling overall 12-3 record they are the best kept secret on the DU campus. 482 spectators attended the championship match. The remaining 1,500 yellow seats in the 2,000 seat Hamilton Gym were unused.

There are plenty of reasons why the Hamilton Gym was not full. It was a beautiful sunny Sunday in Denver. The team is a young and part of an up-and-coming program which is only starting to gain a regular following. They were playing Abiline Christian, hardly a big name in Denver- but they did defeat Montana and University of Illinois-Chicago the prior two days. Finally, many women's sports are not well attended - topic for another blog.

But, this is a team that deserves more. They are scrappy. They play like a team. They are athletic. They are deep - overcoming injuries to key players. They can play from behind in matches. They can play on the road. They are well coached and calm under fire under the steady hand of Coach Jesse Mahoney. They are winning.

Denver fans can watch one of the most exciting up-and-coming teams at Denver University. If you are a student or alumni from Denver, you need to go and see for yourself. If you are not from Denver, check this team out on PioneerVision (link below).

Do you plan on seeing volleyball this year? If so, why? If not, why?

DU men's soccer is undefeated this year, ranked #15 in the country and drew 475 fans on a perfect night tonight as the Pios beat almost-ranked Utah Valley, 2-1 on OT.

I think there are just too many good teams at DU these days...

DU Soccer now ranked #12 in the country. Show up students. NO LAME EXCUSES. I went to DU and nobody studies in September. 475 is pathetic. If we keep winning, we will get 1-2 NCAA games on campus.

Great enthusiasm and a fair challenge. One of the goals of LGDU is to promote all DU sports, especially those on a roll. That is certainly the case with DU men's soccer.

Charles: DU has changed since you were here. 40 percent of the incoming freshmen this year had 4.0 GPAs in HS. Avg incoming GPA is 3.7 and 1250 SAT. These kids study all the time. Getting students to come to any event is hard, even in sept.

Charles, when was the last time you were on DU's campus?

Anonymous, you prove my point. DU kids are so smart now that they need to study less.

Allwrite, it's been way to long to be honest. I'll be back for The Battle on Blake.
