Comeback Replay 2007: DU Hockey Ignites in Final Six Minutes

As we watched the No. 7 Michigan State Spartans stun No. 12 Michigan Wolverines 27-23 on the final play of a football game this past Saturday, we had to think of some of DU's greatest comebacks. Of course, Gwozdecky's hockey teams made a practice of coming back late so it is almost impossible to pick one game. We looked back into the LetsGoDU vaults and found a true gem from December 9, 2007. This is not a last second win - it is a come-from-behind six minute demolition of St. Cloud State on the road with a super-star effort from Rhett Rakhshani:

From 2007 - LetsGoDU
The LetsGoDU Video Production Team was up half the night putting together a video (below) for your enjoyment.  Its 9 1/2 minutes long but completely captures the last six minutes of the game with all replays.
To set the scene, Rhett Rakhshani scored three goals in a five-minute span of the third period Saturday as the University of Denver hockey team rallied to beat St. Cloud State 3-2.
When St. Cloud State went on the power play with six minutes left, it looked like the Huskies would avenge a 3-2 loss to DU in Friday's series opener. But Rakhshani scored 11 seconds into the penalty. He flicked a wrist shot from the right circle into the upper left corner past goalie Jase Weslosky.
Three minutes and 24 seconds later, Rakhshani cut behind the net and banked a shot off Weslosky and into the crease, where Huskies forward Garrett Roe inadvertently knocked the puck over the goal line. And about two minutes after later, Rakhshani one-timed a shot from between the circles past Weslosky, who finished with 39 saves.

Best DU comeback that I have seen, was in the 2004 Frozen Four in the semi final vs. UMD. DU went into the third period down 3-1, then stormed back for the next 4 goals, including an awesome goal by Ryan Caldwell to tie it. Lukas Dora had the game winner, then Connor James unselfishly passed to Greg Keith who had the empty netter. DU goes on to beat Maine in the final 1-0, surviving the legendary 6-on-3, to win the first championship since 1969.

You can call that a "Rakh Trick."
