Halloween Weekend Soccer Summary

The women's soccer team fell to Oral Roberts Sunday afternoon 4-0 in Tulsa, OK. They ended the season in 5th place in the Summit League with a 4-4 conference record. Only the top four league finishers qualify for the Summit League Tournament so this loss marks the end of the season for the Pios.

Oral Roberts jumped out to a 3-0 first half lead and coasted from there. While DU's season didn't exactly go as planned, starting with an 11-game winless streak, they finished by winning 4 out of their last 5 games. Scoring was a problem all year. Coach Jeff Hooker will need to address the offense this off-season. Just a few key additions and another year of experience from the returning players, they can prove this year was a fluke.

On the other hand, the men simply outplayed Eastern Illinois Saturday night and won 1-0 to secure the Summit League regular season championship. Denver got a goal from Cole Stevenson off a feed from Reagan Dunk in the 81st minute. They had 12 shots on goal Saturday night but just one goal. There is concern that the Pios aren't doing a good job finishing on many opportunities. While their lack of scoring efficiency hasn't been a problem in the Summit League, the Pios' NCAA tournament run will be short-lived if they don't turn this around.

As usual, Denver's defense and goalie play continue to be superb. If they can win their final regular season game next weekend, they will be the only modern-era sports team at DU to go undefeated. They play IPFW in Fort Wayne next Saturday at 5:00 PM MT. IPFW is currently sits 1 point out of the four-team Summit League playoffs so the Pioneers will no doubt get the Mastodons' best shot.
