On a Mother’s Day that brought Denver its first hint of summer, the University of Denver club baseball squad said goodbye to former pitcher Joe Lubar, who was killed in a skiing accident over the winter.

Joined by more than 30 of Lubar’s family and friends drawn from across the Midwest, teammates retired Lubar’s No. 9 jersey before putting on a hitting display in a game played in his honor, beating rivals Colorado College 14-7 [read entire article].

Charlie Sheen strapped on his cleats last week stepped into the batter's box at DU's club baseball team practice and blasted a home run off of a former major league 3rd baseman, Todd Zeile.

Sheen was hanging out in Denver last Friday when he felt like taking some batting practice, so he bought five cases of baseballs and headed over to All-City Field near the University of Denver, while DU's club baseball team was team was holding practice.

Sheen, who was with former Major League stud Todd Zeile, asked the players if he could take a few cuts and they were more than happy to let him play ball.

With Zeile on the mound Sheen ripped one over the right field fence 360 feet away.

After the hitting session, we're told Sheen took a bunch of photos with the players and donated all of the baseballs to the team.

Actor Charlie Sheen practiced with the DU club baseball team last Friday at All City Field at South High School after being in town for the Denver leg of his comedy show, "My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat is Not an Option," at the Wells Fargo Theatre.

Todd Zeil, an ex-Major League Baseball player, contacted a senior on the team on Friday, telling him that Charlie Sheen was "looking to throw the ball around with us," according to Denton, a player on the club baseball team. 

Sheen hit a homerun during batting practice.

University of Denver baseball club members are dealing with the grief of the tragic skiing accident of teammate Joe Lubar, who's funeral was held Monday. They have produced a fundraising T-shirt they are selling to keep Joe's memory alive. The proceeds will be donated to the family.

DU Student Dies From Skiing Accident Injuries

Members of the Milwaukee Brewers organization, the University of Denver community and the DU club baseball team are mourning the loss of student Joe Lubar, 21, who died Friday after suffering traumatic injuries in a skiing accident in Colorado.

The Summit County Coroner's Office says Joe Lubar fell on Jan. 25 above tree line at Copper Mountain. He was on a double black diamond run when he fell and suffered brain injuries.

He was taken first to a hospital in Summit County and then transferred to St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver. He died early on Friday morning.

While at school, Lubar was a prolific pitcher on the University of Denver club baseball team. His DU teammates are planning on honoring him through a fundraising event on Feb. 19th.

Lubey as his teammates called him, is the son of David Lubar, one of the members of the Brewers ownership group. Mr. Lubar serves on the team's advisory board and heads its finance committee.

The Lubar family, led by patriarch Sheldon Lubar, is one of the most prominent families in Milwaukee, noted philanthropists and huge backers of sports in the city.
