Denver Post: DU Warns Metro Of Legal Battle

(above) Chancellor Coombe comes out swinging today in the Denver Post against the proposed name change at Metro State

Metropolitan State College of Denver trustees and students may think Denver State University is a great new name for their school, but leaders of the University of Denver say the change could create confusion and muddy the private school's long-standing identity.

In a letter this week to the Colorado legislature — which must authorize the name change — DU attorneys said university officials "strongly oppose" Metro State becoming Denver State.

"The change would interfere with Denver University's essential communication with its many constituents," chancellor Robert Coombe wrote to lawmakers Monday. [read entire article]

Great to see Chancellor Coombe come out decisively on this issue. Lets hope that the Metro Trustees Meeting resolves this issue.

Glad to see DU has been objecting to this for a while behind the scenes and that the Board of Trustees and the Chancellor are fighting to protect DU from potential brand dilution.

Metro should pick another name.

A key guy in this Metro State nonsense will be(and probably is already) Dan Ritchie. He has as much political clout in Colorado as anybody. I'm sure he's on our side.

Pfff...Just a delay to the process. It will be changed. DU has very indigent and insufficient reasons for it not too happen. But, by all means, please throw more DU alumni money at the issue.

if the best argument is that someone screwed up with university of san diego and san diego state university while engraving a trophy, then, well, i think the case is screwed to be honest. i don't see how that could be a persuasive legal argument.

i do find it kind of amusing that the two schools' acceptance rates are almost identical: DU 70.5% and Metro 71.7%

What is an "indigent" reason? Must be a Metro student trying, but failing, to sound smart. I hope Coombe comes out on top!

Umm, instead of the acceptance rates, why don't you look at the QUALIFICATIONS of the students that get accepted and enroll. DU accepts 70% of A or B+ students, Metro accepts 70% of C and D+ students.

@ anon 12:03 -

For the next incoming class, DU had 14,000 applicants for 1,500 spots. I'm no math whiz but I struggle to see how you got 70%.

Middle 50% of incoming Metro students' ACT scores: 18-22
Middle 50% of incoming DU students' ACT scores: 25-30

Not even close.

Acceptance rates are misleading.

It's apples and oranges.

DU's applicant pool is far more self-selecting than Metro's applicant pool.

Metro is accepting 70% of a lower level of applicant, and the incoming student quality level is far lower.

DU has to accept 70% of a much more highly qulaified apllicant pool in order to fill it's 1,200 freshman spots, as only about 20% of accepted students actually enroll here (the other 80% of applicants who don't choose DU are looking at other high quality schools).

The average DU student was in the top 25% of his class and has an incoming GPA of 3.71, and the quality is going up every year. Test scores are also far higher at DU.

Here is DU's admissions vs peers, based on 2009 data.

Some funny comments left by readers in the Post article.

FYI...the story has been updated.

The Metro trustees have postponed the renaming talk for a year in order to further study the DU infringement claims.

So let me get this straight; DU is also known as the University of Denver? Why not UD? Seems a little silly to me.

It's no wonder your hockey beat writer in the local fish wrap is a little silly too. He probably is going silly with UD's silliness.
