Boone Supports DU Hoops Team At Fan Jam

Attendance was a little light last night at DU's Fan Jam which was billed as a "Kickoff to Homecoming Weekend."  However the fans, students and alumni who did attended were treated to free food and the obligatory Boone sighting.

Chancellor Coombe was spotted in attendance and he must have been thinking, "If we'd just added the Elk Mascot this summer we could of doubled the number of mascots in attendance."

DU Official Admits To $100,000 Mascot Blunder

(above) The Mascot Debacle's official cost was $100,000 ... the long-term costs are unknown
The April 5th meeting of the Faculty Senate Minutes contained an interesting nugget when University of Denver Kevin Carroll, Vice Chancellor of Marketing & Communications, presented an update on the Mascot Development Project

Carroll admitted under questioning that DU would spend $100,000 on proposed mascot. He added that the money would be paid back to the university through "royalty payments."

Now that the project has been mothballed, the "royalty payments" won't be happening.

DU has flushed $100,000 down the drain; money that could of been used for scholarships, faculty pay raises or lowering tuition increase.

Six months later, one wonders if the actual cost of the "Mascot Debacle" won't be far greater. How much damage to alumni donations, lost ticket sales and of course the damaging publicity to the university in local, state and national media?

DU Mascot Committee Unveils New Jackalope

(above) The University of Denver's new Jackalope mascot
Not deterred by a recent overwhelming rejection of its three mascot candidates in an online survey of 75,000 alumni, students, parents, faculty, administrators and season ticket holders, Chancellor Robert Coombe unveiled the latest DU mascot candidate on Monday evening.

The new Red-Vested Jackalope will be nicknamed "Mile-High Cyrus."

Sure to be popular with students aged 18-22, Mile-High Cyrus offers many advantages over Denver Boone.

CU AD Gets Canned For Fundraising Failures

Mike Bohn axed at CU
A very interesting article in the Denver Post today on the University of Colorado Athletic Director getting fired this week. These are unbelievably challenging times for collegiate athletic departments.

In March, Chancellor Coombe cut the DU Athletic Department budget by $500,000 for next fiscal year. He also froze faculty salaries and raised tuition by 3.8% for 2013-14 as well. No doubt the Gwozdecky firing, the golf coach resignation and reported budget problems on the ski team were related. More painful cuts are sure to come.

This week DU extended Bill Tierney's contract, joined the Big East in lacrosse and priority number one is to expand seating capacity at Barton Lacrosse Stadium.

The point of this is that the facilities arms race, wild television contracts, huge coaches contracts and conference affiation roulette will call for elite fund raisers to run the athletic departments and universities of tomorrow.
"One day after Colorado chancellor Phil DiStefano had his say about why the university abruptly decided to let its athletic director go, Mike Bohn took his chance for rebuttal.

Tops on the list? Fundraising not matching expectations.

"The insinuation that we don't have a (fundraising) plan is offensive at best," Bohn said. "Our Sustainable Excellence Initiative is one we've been working on for three years. And we've been working hard on what works. How do we work within the footprint we have?" [read entire article].

Westword Writes Another Article About Boone

(above) For the second time this week Westword takes aim at DU's controversial mascot search, this time focusing on the Mascot Task Force and the process they are using to select a new mascot
From: Westword

Is the University of Denver's hunt for a new mascot turning into a Boone-doggle? That's what some alumni are wondering after attending a Thursday focus group, part of a campus-wide process to calm controversy and select a new mascot. Denver Boone, a coonskin cap-wearing caricature, was adopted as the image of the DU Pioneers back in 1968; although he was banished three decades later,  Chancellor Robert Coombe agreed in 2008 that Boone could return in an unofficial capacity. But now that era is over.

And this time, it sounds like there's no possibility of Boone, who just won our Readers' choice for Best Mascot, will be coming back [read entire article].

Westword: Feature Article About Killing Boone

(above) Will Chancellor Coombe stand trial for murdering Denver Boone?
From: Westword
by Patricia Calhoun

The University of Denver was founded in 1864, only five years after Denver got its start and the same year a flood threatened to wipe the tiny town off the map. But DU has always had a fighting spirit — and today, both students and alumni are fighting mad over Boone, the once-official, now-very-unofficial image representing the Pioneers.

At this point, the only mascot the DU community might agree on would be a giant, foil-wrapped burrito with legs — inspired by Steve Ells, the DU alum who was quite the fast-casual pioneer when he opened the first Chipotle in an old Dolly Madison store down the street from DU in July 1993. Today that chain has more than a thousand locations, with new ones opening all the time — not only in this country, but across Europe. And these days, the only thing growing faster than the Chipotle empire is the controversy over Boone [read entire article].

PioNation Under Siege: Day 34

"The Boone image is one that many women, persons of color, international students, staff and faculty members found difficult to relate to as defining the pioneering spirit."

"I am a faculty member and have never been asked about my opinion regarding Boone, Ruckus or any other mascot. The choice of words in the email appears designed to preempt any expression of support for Boone rather than let alumni voice their own opinions. Very disappointing and not something that alumni should let slide."

Westword Covers Coombe's Mascot Email

(above) Westword covers the Boone Mascot Saga
From: Westword
by Patrica Calhoun

The Chancellor "is supporting the efforts of students who came to him and asked to study having a mascot," reports spokeswoman Kim DeVigil. "I applaud the students for their initiative and desire to truly show their commitment to build on inclusive excellence-- even in the way they celebrate their school spirit."

This isn't DU's only study of past conflicts. DeVigil reports that the university has begun to meet with leaders to discuss founder John Evans's role in the Sand Creek Massacre, "to do something together that would be significant, positive and healing for everyone." The school was founded in 1864, the same year that Colonel John Chivington, a colleague of then-Territorial Governor Evans, killed at least 150 Cheyenne and Arapaho camped at Sand Creek. Northwestern University, which was co-founded by Evans before he moved West, has already undertaken a similar study [read entire article].

Coombe Sends Out Another Email Ripping Boone

(above) Coombe Daddy ain't giving up on his dream to give DU a crappy mascot
March 13, 2013

Dear Members of the DU Community:

All of us at DU are committed to inclusive excellence in everything that we do, as it is a major goal for the University as a whole. It’s important that we all support that goal in our actions, in our words, and in the images we associate with our community. Over the last few weeks there has been considerable controversy surrounding the “Denver Boone” figure that was our mascot some years ago. I am writing to you today in the hope of adding some clarity to this discussion, in particular regarding the University’s position on the matter.

As you may know, “Boone” has not been the mascot of the University since 1998, and we currently do not have an official mascot. An effort to resurrect Boone was mounted by student and alumni groups in 2008, and this led to the assembly of a University committee to gather opinion from different sectors and consider the matter at length. It quickly became clear that Boone was a polarizing figure that did not reflect the growing diversity of the DU community, but rather was an image that many women, persons of color, international students and faculty members found difficult to relate to as defining the pioneering spirit. Consequently I decided at that time that Boone would not be our official mascot. The current Boone figure that is seen at athletic events is in keeping with language in a letter that I sent to the community in 2008 that allows students and alumni groups to use the image as a celebration of the past, to the extent they may choose. The figure is not used in any official manner by the University, nor do we provide any financial support for its use by others. The person in the Boone costume at athletic events is a ticket holder, and nothing more.

The Undergraduate Student Government has taken up this matter and formed a task force that will move forward with research into the possibilities for a new mascot, specifically one that reflects our identity as the Pioneers but also the growing diversity of our community and its inclusive and welcoming nature. The task force will not be evaluating support for Boone, as that matter is closed; rather, it will be looking toward a new mascot that everyone can get behind and embrace. The University has offered its support to the task force through its office of Marketing and Communications. USG plans to engage in this effort through spring quarter, with a recommendation to be forwarded to my office and the Board of Trustees. At its meeting in late February, USG voted to phase out funding from student activities fees used by clubs or student groups for materials bearing the Boone image, effective 30 days after the adoption of a new official mascot. This is a great move forward.

I believe that the action by USG provides a tremendous opportunity to accelerate our progress toward inclusive excellence. As we mount a productive conversation about a new mascot, I hope our thoughts will be forward-looking and reflective of the University that we are to become, rather than the University that we were decades ago. Ten years from now, our student population will be vastly more diverse than it is now, in a way that represents tremendous intellectual potential for the institution as a whole. The real question is whether as a community we will be vastly more inclusive than we are now, with our images and icons, and our mascot, reflective of that rich diversity and inclusiveness. We should challenge ourselves to look to that future.

Mile High Mids Blog Questions Coombe's Email

(above) If the Mascot Task Force is looking for a fresh ideas, "Copper Coombe," the exclusive excellence mascot

That pesky basketball blogger, Brendon Loy, keeps asking questions that nobody in Coombe's Kingdom wants to answer.
And we have a few questions of our own:
  • What are the qualifications of the Mascot Task Force Committee to make such a momentous decision?
  • Coombe is rumored to be stepping down in 2014. Is the administration rushing to push this through before he departs?
  • What other universities besides DU, allows its Chancellors to continually change the school's mascots on a whim without any input from alums & students? Ritchie retroactively changing the mascot in 1998. Coombe deciding in 2008 that Boone wouldn't be mascot despite overwhelming student popularity [87% in Clarion poll]. And now this "hand picked" Task Force that's stacked with multiculturalist allies [Provost Gregg Kvistad & his cronies].
  • Finally, isn't the Red-Tailed Hawk the "official mascot" of DU as decided by the Board of Trustees in 1998? If the BOT didn't eliminate Ruckus by vote; whats the problem? Boone isn't the school mascot, the Red-Tailed Hawk is.

What If Coombe Daddy Was NFL Commissioner?

(above) Presiding over DU is small potatoes, Coombe Daddy has bigger plans
Last month University of Denver Chancellor Robert Coombe initiated a student/faculty task force charged with developing a new mascot/logo for the university.  The trick was rigging the task force with muppets who were so biased that "Western imagery resembling a Pioneer" would never be considered.  The Task Force was formed, and the Official DU ox/astronaut/elk/miner T-shirts are on the way to a DU Bookstore near you.

That got us thinking; What is Coombe Daddy's end game?  Clearly he's got bigger fish to fry.  Why not leave DU's meddlesome alumni and drunk students behind [or is it drunk alumni and meddlesome students?] and move to a job that would spread his multi-cultural agenda to the masses.

NFL Commissioner would look great on the old resume.  Great pay, travel by private jet and tons of power.  Coombe Daddy can't stop dabbling in DU's mascots and logos, so the first order of business would be to shape the NFL to fit his world-view.

DU Student Senate Bans Boone Funding

(above) Chancellor Coombe Daddy approved a task force to bring a new mascot to DU
From: DU Clarion
by Sarah Ford

Last night the University of Denver Undergraduate Student Government (USG) passed a resolution [15 votes to 6 votes] banning the use of student activity funding by campus clubs to purchase materials with the image of the Denver Boone mascot.

A student and faculty “task force” formed by student Will Guy and led by Student Body President Sam Estenson has begun to examining the possibility of instituting a new, official university mascot by next year. Estenson said there is no possibility that Boone will be brought back and re-approved as the official mascot of DU.

According to Estenson, the task force will come up with a new school mascot, including Greek Life, Athletics, the Center for Multicultural Excellence (CME), the Office of Student Life, the marketing department and the Provost.

According to Guy, the task force has also started hearing ideas for a new mascot as well, though they are not making any official suggestions at this point. He said they have had suggestions for images such as an astronaut, gold miner, an ox and an elk.

The Pumpkin That Lauched A Mascot

For those that don't know or remember the entire backstory...

A University of Denver Alum from Atlanta emailed LetsGoDU this photo of his "Pumpkin Boone" in 2008.  The Bring Back Boone movement was gathering momentum across campus until Chancellor Coombe's decision that, "Boone would not become the official mascot of the University of Denver."

After Coombe's controversial decision, Richard emailed me again and said, "Lets just build a Boone mascot anyway."

So LetsGoDU published an article and asked for donations. 25 alums, students and fans sent in checks totaling $4,800.  The Boone mascot was designed, built and purchased from a company in Toronto in time for the 2009 Frozen Four in Washington DC.

As as Boonemania sweeps across Pionation, know that without this carved Halloween pumpkin there would not have been a Boone mascot costume.

Happy Halloween PioNation.

Will Coombe Knock Down DU's Evans Chapel?

(above) Evans Chapel was named after DU's founder John Evans
On Friday, University of Denver Chancellor, Dr. Robert Coombe fired off an email to students, faculty and staff promising to "understand how our actions affect others, and how cartoonish depictions not only push us apart, but also reflect our limited understanding of one another."

Coombe went on, "As our community becomes more diverse, we still have work to do with regard to mutual understanding and inclusion."

Which brings us to Evans Chapel located in in the heart of DU's campus. Can DU have a Chapel named after a man who, while Governor of Colorado in 1865, was fired ... er ... asked to resign by President Andrew Johnson for ordering and then allegedly covering-up the Sand Creek Massacre of 163 unarmed Native Americans?

Coombe Throws Lamda Chi & Tri-Delt Under The Bus

Chancellor Coombe wrote the letter below to DU students, faculty and staff today.

Dear Members of the DU Community,

Not long ago, we became aware of an unfortunate incident involving some of our students.

Just over a month ago, a University of Denver fraternity and sorority jointly held a party with the theme "Cowboys and Indians." Costumes worn at this event reflected negative stereotypes of Native American peoples.

Whether or not anyone meant to be disrespectful or hurtful, their actions did inflict painful wounds. We must all come to understand how our actions affect others, and how cartoonish depictions not only push us apart, but also reflect our limited understanding of one another.

Members of the Native Student Alliance, the Campus Activities office, the Center for Multicultural Excellence, and the involved fraternity and sorority have already embarked on a learning and healing process, meeting several times since the incident to talk, and more importantly, to listen. The three student organizations cooperated on an information table on Driscoll Green, and the fraternity and sorority read an apology publicly there on Wednesday.

As members of the University Community, particularly students preparing to be leaders in an increasingly diverse and global society, we must respect and value our differences. We must fight at every turn the perpetuation of stereotypical and derogatory misrepresentations. It is the responsibility of every member of the DU community to ensure that we continue to create an inclusive and equitable campus environment. We will all hold ourselves to this.

We hope that this incident, though negative, can stimulate a broader conversation on campus. As our community becomes more diverse, we still have work to do with regard to mutual understanding and inclusion.

I thank you all for joining this effort, and for your commitment to these values.

DU's "Inclusive Excellence" Policies Are A Joke

(above) Hey Kids, you're violating DU's "Diversity Statement"

Chancellor Coombe's PC Police are on patrol again and this time their failed priorities have made the Denver Post and Westword newspapers.  A recent fraternity & sorority Cowboys & Indians party supposedly belittled Native American students' culture and spirituality, and the theme party also violated the University of Denver's "Diversity Statement."

If you're wondering why DU jacked up student tuition 3.5% next year, you only have to read the Denver Post article.  DU actually has a paid "Assistant Provost for Inclusive Excellence."  What this person actually does for $50,000 a year in salary and benefits was on full display in the Post article.

Back at the "Tepee Party" on the Driscoll Lawn, more than 100 students and other onlookers watched and listened as a succession of speakers described an ongoing lack of respect for Native Americans that includes continued use of stereotypes.

Westword has the details of the offending event that caused the uproar.
"An unusual event will took place yesterday on the University of Denver campus -- one prompted by another unusual event. At 4 p.m., students and administrators gathered near a tepee on Driscoll Green as representatives of two Greek Life organizations publicly apologized for a Cowboys and Indians theme party DU's Native Student Alliance dubs "piercingly offensive."

The bash, which took place on February 25, was sponsored by the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and Delta Delta Delta sorority. Attendees were encouraged to outfit themselves as either cowboys or Indians. Those who made the latter choice donned what an Alliance release describes as "phony headdresses, face paint, loincloths and all manner of stereotypical viciousness."
DU administrators have spent the past six years running around banning Boone logos & mascots on campus, suspending a tenured professor for mentioning masterbation in class, embarrassing students who wear costumes to parties and holding mandatory dorm meetings every time some Freshman makes a homophobic comment.

As a recent DU Clarion editorial points out, just because DU is bending over backwards to admit minority students from elite private high schools or the children of wealthy Third-World industrialists doesn't really mean you are championing diversity.

"Inclusive Excellence" at the University of Denver has been, is now and will always be a complete failure.  It hasn't increased minority enrollment, has made a mockery of diversity and is costing DU students a ton in wasted tuition.  And now this story is sure to be picked up by newspapers around the country further tarnishing DU's good name.

The problem is a failed policy, not racist students.

Denver Post Editorial Rips DU's 3.5% Tuition Hike

From: Denver Post
by Rory Regan

On March 2, University of Denver Provest Greg Kivstad distributed an email to current students, informing them that the University planned to raise tuition by 3.5 percent for the 2012-13 academic year.

Kvistad cited the "challenging times for colleges and universities" as justification for the tuition hike. He continued by noting that planned increases in student aid would mitigate against the cost increase and concluded by thanking students for their "continued trust" in the university's "mission" [read entire editorial].
