DU 7 - Air Force 1 FINAL

(above) It was a big night for the Shore brothers as they recorded two goals and four assists
“When you can score early and score first like we did, it really helps you from a psychological standpoint and emotionally,” Denver coach George Gwozdecky said. “We’ve made changes to be in better position defensively, play harder defensively and manage the puck better. They were little subtle adjustments, and you can see the guys start to buy into it more with every period we played this weekend."
-DU head coach George Gwozdecky
The University of Denver hockey team spent a week of practice concentrating on defensive intensity.  The result? A ten goal weekend.  The Pioneers scored early and often to defeat Air Force 7-1 in Colorado Springs.

For the second night in a row, DU jumped out to an early lead, but tonight, the goals kept ringing up on the scoreboard.  Drew Shore (2), The Goal Czar (2), Ty Loney, Chris Knowlton & Joey Lagglia scored for DU.

Juho Olkinuora was solid in goal once again.  Fourth-string goaltender Zack Hope notched a few minutes and three saves in mop up duty in the third period.

DU killed off almost four consecutive minutes of 5-on-3 penalty kill before Luke Salazar scored shorthanded on an empty net goal in the third period.

Fun time down at the Academy. Fun rink, friendly fans, and any game where Zach Hope gets in is a blast.

The penalties in the third were ridiculous, great job on the kill. And 50% PP on the weekend? Fantastic!

I think it's awesome that Hope got some minutes.

Drew Shore with 94 career points. Countdown to the Century Club is on!

Interesting comment by Rycroft; when Zucker is there Drew seems to defer. This weekend he carried "it" on his own. Dusty Jackson had his dander up tonight. Like to see that more often.

Great weekend for DU! Hopefully this starts to build momentum and get these guys on track for a big 2nd half. On paper at least, DU has 4 very winnable games coming up at home--series against UAH and Bemidji, before the trip to Anchorage. Hopefully these guys can get on a roll.

Changing gears, Team USA showed some spirit and fight tonight against Canada. After a terrible first period they fought back to get within a goal. Still hard to believe that this team has no shot to play for a medal--only one win in the preliminary round. I can only assume there will be a lot of soul searching within USA Hockey before next year's tournament.

Nice! Didn't expect this result. Good momentum to carry into 2012. Signing the Finn was a stroke of genius or great luck.

This little nugget appeared in the Colorado Springs Gazette game recap.

"Freshman goaltender Juho Olkinuora – who spent time at Serratore’s house with his sons over the Christmas break – stopped 28 shots for the Pioneers."

Is Gwozdecky sending his players around the country to spy on opposing coaches during Christmas Break?

Serratore is a class act DG. I'm not sure why he didn't pan out at DU.

DU needs to sweep the next 3 opponents.....no excuses.

Well said unknown. Thanks for the insight.

DU needs to worry about next Friday night and nothing else. They aren't good enough with five major players missing to be projecting eight game winning streaks.

What about last Friday night?
