Serratore Compares Air Force To An Addict

Frank Serratore
by Brent New

The University of Denver frustrated Air Force 5-2 Saturday night.

Falcons coach Frank Serratore was animated to say the least. “It’s like an addict,” said Serratore a night after losing to Colorado College 6-2.

“We have to admit we have a problem.”

The Pioneers outshot Air Force 42-24 and they won 32 of the game’s faceoffs. Serratore is facing the realization of playing in the same state as some of the nation’s best (#19 CC, #7 DU).

“We are never going to get the talent of CC and DU, we just aren’t,” Serratore said.

“The only way we’re going to beat those guys is we have to play as a team better than they play as a team.”

DU 5 - Air Force 2 FINAL

The University of Denver scored ten goals over the weekend after cruising to a 5-2 victory over Air Force in Magness Arena on Saturday night.  Nick Shore recorded a hat trick, Joey LaLeggia and Zac Larraza added goals.

Denver Post: Air Force To Test DU Tonight

Frank Serratore's infectious personality is just half of what has turned this weekend into college hockey's Colorado state championship. The guy can also coach, evidenced by his worldly — albeit underrated — exploits behind the Air Force hockey bench.

Serratore, who has guided the Falcons to conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in five of the past six years, has turned Front Range hockey into a three-headed monster. The Falcons are feared, which is why this weekend's mythical "state championship" is relevant [read rest of article].

DU Alum Mike Corbett Promoted At Air Force

Mike Corbett
From: USCHO.com
.
Air Force has promoted University of Denver Alum Mike Corbett to associate head coach, the school announced Wednesday.

Corbett has been an assistant to Falcons coach Frank Serratore for nine seasons.

“Mike has done an outstanding job throughout his tenure at Air Force,” Serratore said in a statement. “He has played a key role in the overall success the program has enjoyed. Mike’s expertise has factored greatly into our six-year championship run. The promotion in title is well deserved and overdue.”

Corbett works with the Falcons defensemen, and this season he helped produce a Hobey Baker Award finalist in Tim Kirby.

Corbett played at DU under Frank Serratore & George Gwozdecky from 1994-97 and scored 2 goals and had 11 assists from the blueline.

Ferris State Hopes To Rebound Against DU

Ferris State University enters the NCAA hockey tournament on a sour note in going winless in four of its last five games.

The top-seeded Bulldogs, who won the Central Collegiate Hockey Association regular season title, tied and lost a shootout against Western Michigan University and then lost to WMU in their final regular-season series.

After a bye week, FSU (23-11-5) was ousted in the CCHA Tournament best-of-three quarterfinals series by bottom-seeded Bowling Green.

FSU, which is making the program’s second appearance in the national tournament and the first since 2003, will be a No. 2 seed in the midwest regional in Green Bay and will face Denver (25-13-4) at 5:30 p.m. (EST) on Friday at the Resch Center.

The third-seeded Pioneers lost to North Dakota 4-0 in the WCHA Tournament championship game this past Saturday.

Denver defeated Western Michigan University 3-2 in double overtime in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Green Bay last season before falling to UND 6-1 in the regional championship game the next night.

Giving the Bulldogs even more to think about is Denver’s unbeaten (5-0) record against regular-season conference champions this season. The Pioneers defeated Boston College (Hockey East), Union (ECAC), Air Force (AHA) and were 2-0 against Minnesota (WCHA).

DU 7 - Air Force 1 FINAL

(above) It was a big night for the Shore brothers as they recorded two goals and four assists
“When you can score early and score first like we did, it really helps you from a psychological standpoint and emotionally,” Denver coach George Gwozdecky said. “We’ve made changes to be in better position defensively, play harder defensively and manage the puck better. They were little subtle adjustments, and you can see the guys start to buy into it more with every period we played this weekend."
-DU head coach George Gwozdecky
The University of Denver hockey team spent a week of practice concentrating on defensive intensity.  The result? A ten goal weekend.  The Pioneers scored early and often to defeat Air Force 7-1 in Colorado Springs.

For the second night in a row, DU jumped out to an early lead, but tonight, the goals kept ringing up on the scoreboard.  Drew Shore (2), The Goal Czar (2), Ty Loney, Chris Knowlton & Joey Lagglia scored for DU.

Juho Olkinuora was solid in goal once again.  Fourth-string goaltender Zack Hope notched a few minutes and three saves in mop up duty in the third period.

DU killed off almost four consecutive minutes of 5-on-3 penalty kill before Luke Salazar scored shorthanded on an empty net goal in the third period.

With Jason Zucker up in Canada and John Ryder, Beau Bennett, Sam Brittain and Adam Murray on the shelf with long-term injuries, the Denver Pioneers defeated the #10 ranked Union Dutchmen 3-1 on Friday night.

Denver scored on their first two power play shots in the game and the Union starting goaltender was lifted after giving up two goals on four shots.  Drew Shore & Joey LaLeggia started things off with power-play goals in the first eight minutes of play.  David Makowski assisted on both goals.

DU's makeshift lineup played very well defensively, which was a point of emphasis after Christmas Break.  Shawn Ostrow notched DU's final goal.

The Pioneers will face Air Force, who defeated Colorado College 2-1 on Friday night. It was the first win ever for the Falcons over CC in World Arena.

Our primary concern is playing better in our own end. Our team defense has got to improve. That's what we're talking about and working on. Scott Mayfield Ready For Next Chaper At DU

From: Webster-Kirkwood Times
by Rick Frese

If all goes according to plan, Scott Mayfield will become the first player from Webster Groves, Missouri to play in the NHL.

Four selections into the second round, the 34th pick overall, the New York Islanders chose the 18-year-old Mayfield during the National Hockey League entry draft held June 25. The Islanders now own Mayfield's draft rights for the next four years.

Mayfield shared the moment with his parents, Andrew and Jane, older brother, Patrick, and other family and friends, including little league and Webster Groves High School hockey coach Dave Garth. "They'd been there the whole time," Mayfield said. "It's nice to share this with them."

Mayfield is set to attend the University of Denver on a hockey scholarship this fall, where he hopes to improve well enough to sign with the Islanders in two, three years, maybe sooner. NHL teams use colleges like minor leagues to develop talent.

Mayfield received the scholarship to Denver during the summer of 2009 after his sophomore season at Webster Groves High School. He longed to attend the University of Denver since he was eight, when he visited the campus on family vacations. His father earned his law degree at Denver, and his brother attends the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

"Hockey's been pretty much my whole life," Mayfield said. "It's my life. It's my commitment. I dedicated everything to hockey. It's starting to unfold. Everything has happened in the last two-and-a-half years. This isn't the end, it's only the beginning. I still need to grow and work hard."

In a matter of several months in 2009, Mayfield became an overnight success. He went from playing for the St. Louis AAA Blues midget minor squad and Webster Groves High School to attending a camp in Lake Placid, N.Y. He was then selected to play for Team USA in the Ivan Hlinka Tournament in Slovakia. Mayfield was drafted to play in the USHL. He received a shoebox full of offers to play at top Division I colleges.

"It's neat to see his late development," said Garth, who started coaching Mayfield when he was 11. "When he was, 10, 11, 12, he was not unbelievable. When you see him play now, you say, 'Holy cow, he's turned into a great player.' With Scott, you see strength and power. He went from being a tall and gangly kid to a powerful athlete."

Mayfield draws comparisons to former St. Louis Blues All-Star defenseman Chris Pronger. Like Pronger, the hard-nosed, hard-hitting Mayfield is intimidating because of his size. Scouts have said he is NHL ready with his defensive skills but needs to work on his offense. He is a strong puck handler and skater. He admits he needs to improve his scoring, though he has a hard slap shot and wrist shot.

"My size helps me hit and rough it up," Mayfield said. "I don't take dumb penalties. My skating has improved a lot. With my size, it helps my quickness and footwork."

One Central Scouting Bureau scout said of Mayfield: "He plays like a seasoned veteran. Scott has a smooth, strong and effortless stride, his passes are crisp and he sees the ice well. He has a very good wrist shot and controls the play from the point on the power play."

Garth agrees with the scout's assessment.

"His speed and his ability to control the play, especially at his end of the rink, is very apparent," Garth said.

Mayfield's goal is to help Denver win the NCAA title. Denver has won seven national championships.

"I can't even describe what that would be like," Mayfield said.

"The question he had to answer, 'Was he ready to move on to Youngstown?' " Garth said. "I told him, 'If you go now, you'll have a good chance to start as a freshman (at Denver).' He was very ready to leave town. Hockey-wise, it was an easy decision to make, even if he was the sixth defenseman."

In May, Mayfield attended the NHL Combine in Toronto, where he went through a battery of physical tests and was interviewed by 22 of the 30 NHL teams, including the Blues.

Mayfield was named the most valuable player in the 2010 World Junior A Challenge held in Penticton, British Columbia last November. In 2009, he represented Team USA in the Ivan Hlinka Tournament in Slovakia, where Team USA placed fourth. At the tournament, Mayfield won the skills competition.

"I went from practicing and playing pick-up games with my buddies in St. Louis to playing games in Europe with, and against, first-round NHL draft picks -- crazy," Mayfield blogged on NHL.com. "This was the start of introducing me to a whole new level of play."

Now, Mayfield is ready to start a new chapter toward realizing his dream [read entire article].

Incoming Freshman Familiar With Denver

Scott Mayfield
From: Vindy.com
by Tom Williams

Scott Mayfield said he is “more excited than anxious” in anticipation of next week’s NHL draft.

“It’s new chapter in new life and I am kind of ready for it,” said Mayfield in a telephone interview from his home in St. Louis.

On Wednesday the Youngstown Phantoms defensemen will travel to St. Paul, Minn., for the draft, which begins on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Excel Energy Center, the home of the Minnesota Wild.

Mayfield, who plans to play for the University of Denver this fall, is projected to be a middle-to-late first-round selection.

Mayfield will make the trip with goaltender Matt Mahalak, who was the Phantoms’ backup goalie during the 2009-10 season, the team’s first in the USHL.

Last season, Mahalak was a backup goalie for the OHL’s Plymouth Whalers. He had eight wins, eight losses, one overtime loss and one shootout loss.

In a NHL.com ranking of North American goalies eligible for the draft, Mahalak is eighth.

Mayfield resumed regular skating two weeks ago in case he’s drafted by a team that holds a rookie camp after the draft.

“I have no idea what my summer will look like,” he said. “But if there is a camp, I know it won’t take up my whole summer.”

Even though his classes won’t begin until mid-September, Mayfield plans to be in Denver a month early to get acclimated. He looks forward to using the trail bicycle he purchased.

And he won’t be far from family as his brother, Patrick, is at the Air Force Academy about 90 minutes south of Denver in Colorado Springs.

“My Dad went to law school at DU, so we’re familiar with the city,” Mayfield said.

He’s undecided on his major but is leaning toward Hotel & Restaurant Management, something he figures could come in handy once his playing days are over.

Air Force Won't Be Switching Conferences

From: Colorado Springs Gazette
by David Ramsey

Chaos could soon arrive in the long placid world of college hockey, but Air Force has no plans to join the frenzy.

The Big Ten hockey conference will begin in 2013-2014, which means the Western Collegiate Hockey Association will lose Wisconsin and Minnesota and the Central Collegiate Hockey Association will lose Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State.

An eruption of change seems likely with a frenzied chase to reorganize conferences.

One thing seems clear:

The Falcons aren’t going anywhere [read rest of article].
