BC Assistant Greg Brown To Interview At DU Today

(above) Greg Brown [center] will interview at DU today

Boston College associate head coach Greg Brown will interview for the open head coaching job at the University of Denver on Saturday.

Brown is in his ninth season as a member of the Eagles' coaching staff. He has helped guide BC to five NCAA Frozen Fours, including titles in 2008, 2010 and 2012. Brown was also a pretty good player in his own right -- a two-time U.S. Olympian, Brown played for the both the 1988 and 1992 U.S. Olympic men's ice hockey teams and a two-time Hobey Baker finalist in 1989 and 1990 (finishing as the runner up to Michigan State's Kip Miller).
.
Brown was recently named an assistant coach of the 2014 U.S. National Junior Team that will compete in 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship Dec. 26, 2013 - Jan. 5, 2014, in Malmo, Sweden.
.
By no means do I want to see Brown leave the Heights, but he has more than earned the right to interview for his own head coaching gig. Brown could also do a lot worse than Denver, consistently one of the top programs in the country. Denver, in turn, could also do a lot worse than hiring Greg Brown. Sometimes you just have to cut your teeth coaching at lesser programs before returning to your alma mater to succeed Coach York behind the Eagles' bench.

"lesser programs". Greg, here's a thought. If you are just using DU as a place to build your resume, don't bother! Here's another thought. Gwoz always ran a clean program, the same can't be said for BU. If you take the job, we expect that tradition to continue.

Miller, you need to stay on top if your Alzheimer's medication. After you read the article you forgot that it was BC not BU.

Thirets syndrome is a problem also anon9:46.

DU did this to themselves, and now DU fans are eating each other.

Very sad that DU has made such a mess of things.

Vegas still says Coombs will go this weekend ... we'll see.

Greg didn't write the article. The blogger was being intentionally inflammatory.

Greg is from BC not BU.

Finally, if DU takes a coach like Greg Brown they know the risks of him returning home.

Denver is the kind of city people fall in love with. If he's selected and accepts DU's offer, a lot will depend on how his family adapts to Denver. And if BC comes a knocking, DU better be ready to step up and match the offer.

WCSH [NBCTV-Channel 6] in Maine is reporting Jim Montgomery has been offered the Denver job.

But moments later....

The Sports Director at Fax/ABC Maine Aaron Jackson Twittered

‏@AaronRJackson 21m

"Despite reports to the contrary Jim Montgomery told me just moments ago he has not been offered the Denver coaching position. #mesports"

DG,

Didn't you move back to Texass? If you left Denver for that hellhole, why wouldn't Brown move back to Boston?

Greg Brown has been the leading candidate since the beginning. There is a reason he is the last to interview. Assuming he knocks it out of the park, he will be held over to complete a contract Sunday and there sill be a press conference Monday.

He will bring instant credibility and a new system to DU. I hope he brings in a team of young, talented assistants so they can build some energy around the program together.

It is Spring in Denver with the temperatures near 70 degrees today. No way he turns this one down. The facilities, the campus, the program...

Once he gets situated in Denver, I see little reason for him to bolt to return to the East Coast. Take it from one East Coaster who can't wait to get back!

I kinda wish Montgomery would coach at Maine, Brown would coach someday at BC, and we just cut the crap and hire Seth! Just DU it!!!

Anonymous said...

Gwoz. has the Maine job if he wants it .Talks are on going. it's the talk of Pittsburgh.

Anonymous said...

So Seth extended his contract at rpi. Too bad he was my first choice. Good for rpi to keep him. It will be interesting to hear how that played out in the du negotiations, whether he was first choice or not. Hoping for Brown now. Exciting stuff.

I for one do not want a BC guy @ Denver. Lalonde is our guy he wins and knows the program better then any of the other candidates...

Maine fires, DU hires..... Nice work.

Shore leaves early..... Yawn.

You need to get with it, DG...... Oh, one more thing ..... Juho made second team all-American.

Monte got the job, good luck to us all

Can we please do a caption contest for this photo? LOL

"Godammit; York won't listen to me. I TOLD him to pull up his pants; maybe you can talk some sense into him"

"Alright Jerry; We want see to those pictures of us that you were drawing"

Monty confirmed. Yuck.

Shut that fu##ing Nazi a##hole up!!

Sweet character upgrade. Arrogant quotes about lack of contact from Maine? Check. DWI? Check. As much appreciation for the Denver tradition as the mascot committee? Check. Hope he can win

Anonymous said...

Character doesn't seem to be the strong suit for the DU Trustees. Tradition? No. Winning. Uh...no, not that either. Trust? .... ummmmmmmm.

I've not seen a more graceless way of handling things.

Does DU really mean 'Dunces r Us'?

I have to say, this is a surprise. Ironically, this clears the way for Gwoz at Maine. Brown must have bailed with assuarnces from BC he will replace York.

I expect we will lose Miller and possibly Lasonde when Gwoz gets the job. I would guess we are retaining them because we do not want to buy- out their contracts. When/If any of them go, Monty can pick his assistants.

Disappointed we lost Brown but looking forward to learning more about Montgomery. I don't see a DUI a long time ago as a problem - all of us could have had similar problems under the right/wrong circumstances.

Good luck to Montgomery and Coach Gwozdecky!

Peg made a colossal mistake in her treatment of, and in firing Gwozdecky. She made several mistakes with regards to basketball and securing a conference. She wants to leave a legacy of some sort - she is firing grenades, or canons, or nuclear bombs on her mission, and doesn't seem to care about the collateral damage along the way. When will she be held accountable for her actions? Do the powers that be acknowledge her mistakes? Do they care?

DU hired the drunk driver? Good news is that he didn't kill anyone while intoxicated but I wouldn't let him drive the bus.

Anonymous said...

@ anon 6:01...

Your anger towards Peg is misplaced.

The decision to fire Gwozdecky was made far above her pay grade... as far above as it is possible to be while still remaining on the DU campus. She was, in reality, little more than the messenger. I mean, you can blame her if you wish, but understand that such bellicosity does nothing but make you look foolish.

Moving on...

It is difficult to imagine that ANY athletic director at a school like DU would have had more success than Peg when it came to conference affiliation. DU is small, private, geographically isolated and (most importantly) does not have football - a combination of factors that leaves Peg only the barest control over DU's conference destiny. The appearance of constant "conference-hopping" was brought on by factors almost completely out of DU's control - most of them a corollary effect brought on by the BCS-based football conference shuffle that has been going on the past few years.

Honestly, what more would you have her do?

Oh, join a stable conference of like-minded

Well, there are rumors that DU could secure an invitation to join the West Coast Conference...made up entirely of small, private schools that don't have football teams. Sounds ideal, right? Well, unfortunately, the supposed invitation comes with the stipulation that DU add baseball and softball. Put simply, in the current financial climate, this is not an option for DU.

Again. What more would you have her do?

Oh, and what has she done wrong regarding the basketball team?

7:04, as much as you say 6:01's anger towards Peg is misplaced, your defense of her is also misplaced. None of us really know what's going on. She seems to be doing a good job, but who really knows? People give that give her praise give her credit for Tierney and Scott, but then say the Gwoz situation was "above her". Maybe Tierney and Scott came from higher powers too. She can't just be a puppet for the BOT when things go wrong, and then the captain of the ship when things go right. Unless you sit in the meetings, I'm skepticle that you can provide any better analysis of her performance than 6:01 can.

You make it sound like a monkey could do Peg's job. How much do they pay her?

Anonymous said...

5 bananas a week ;)

Anonymous said...

Well, if DU ever goes into a 2nd intermission down 2-0, Montgomery will be able to give a rally-the-troops speech like a boss.

err, that should have read "down by 2"

DU has announced a press conference for Monday morning 11 AM MT to announce the new coach at http://www.9news.com/sports/article/330187/295/Denver-Pioneers-to-hire-Jim-Montgomery-as-next-Hockey-Head-Coach-

Anonymous said...

Okay Peg, how is this an improvement? Pretty lame. This guy is not even good enough for his alma mater to consider him. Perhaps you should concentrate on which basketball league we are going to be in next year and stop trying to destroy the program that pays the bills.

Anonymous said...

I can tell you that 6:01 is spot on. She cut off contract talks years ago and has had a personality conflict with him. This firing was all her and has been brewing for years. Just ask George, although he is too classy to talk about outside of his inner circle. So I agree, who holds her accountable?

Anonymous said...

I don't donate a lot compared to the billionaires like Richie, but I'm sending my money elsewhere ...

Disgusting.

Anonymous said...

Well, I look at it this way, I won't have to spend as much on $8 beers next year ...

Anonymous said...

Its big business and big dollars.
DU makes $500+ million per year. Leadership must be in synch whether or not anyone agrees with.

The public tax disclosures list Margaret Jane Bradley-Doppes' compensation as $353,862 but's nothing compared to Joseph Scott's $534,970 (which is greater than the listed comp for either the Chancellor or Provost).

That cant be an accident. These decisions have to involve people at all pay grades and are part of a plan.

CSU is going big with all sports, CU is trying to figure out football to make the money. Hell, UNC prob got the best deal with a low paid bball coach that hit the NCAA tourney payday. As a private, its hard to know what DU's strategy is and I guess that comes with private.

Stands to reason, though, that whatever the plan is/was, plenty of people had to sign off on it.

Metro St would beat DU in basketball. That is all.

Anonymous said...

No chance. DU was a top 50-75 D-1 team this year - a league champion in the WAC and a postseason 22 win team.

5BWest said...

Metro can't beat Drake.

Anonymous said...

DU could beat a majority of the Division II teams. Not all but most. Hell, they made it all the way to the NCA ... um ... NIT.

Anonymous said...

DU would drill Metro by at least 20-30 points, just as they did to a number of top 100 D-I programs last year. Would not be a close game.

DU is a top 50-70 D-I program out of 347 D-I programs...

Anonymous said...

An honest question:

If DU is top 50 or so, then why were they bounced early in the NIT? The N.I.T. .....

Anonymous said...

DU won their first round game and got to the Sweet 16 of the NIT,

They had to play Maryland on Maryland's home court 36 hours after the home won over Ohio U. DU almost beat Maryland.

DU was rated #43 in Ken Pom and #58 in RPI when they lost. The top 64 teams don't make the NCAAs - only about the top 35-40 do wiith small conference winners and tourney upsets taking the other spots. The NIT is generally teams ranked from 35-70 or so, i

Anonymous said...

Nope, didn't make the top 64 to begin with and did a belly flop in the NIT. I could see an argument for the top 100 but not even close to 50.

Anonymous said...

WAC regular season champ DU finished #63 in the RPI and #44 in KenPom rankings. Much closer to top 50 than top 100. And that was with the 8th youngest roster out of 347 D-I teams.

And they didn't "belly flop" in the NIT, either - they won their first game at home vs Ohio to advanced to the final 16 and had to fly to play higher-seeded Maryland on Maryland's home floor within 36 hours, 1500 miles and two time zones. Still, they battled Maryland until the final minutes, giving the Terps a major scare. No Belly flop.

DU is a quality D-I program now, and with four of five starters returning and a new 6-9 transfer from Xavier scheduled to play this year, I expect DU to break through to the NCAAs. A recent pre-season ranking had DU #35 in the country for next year.

Anonymous said...

Why would DU pursue basketball over hockey? DU has the 4th best basketball team in Colorado after CSU, CU and Air Force. DU has the best hockey team in Colorado.

Anonymous said...

Why? Who says DU should only be good in one sport? I want our teams to be feared in every sport we play.

DU wants to be a great national university with top athletic programs in multiple sports.

We're #1 in men's lax, #4 in skiing,#10 in hockey #12 in wowmens lacrosse, #13 in women's gymnastics, #16 in women's soccer. That's 6 NCAA D-I top 20 programs at this moment. Not bad for a 5,000 undergrad school with 90% jet travel. Other programs are coming up fast - men's hoops in the NIT (top 50), Men's soccer in the top 50, and golf, tennis and swimming programs that are NCAA tourney programs, albeit regionals. Women's hoops and volleyball in rebuilding under new coaches, but both will be over .500 next year

Anonymous said...

So two teams with losinng seasons (under. 500) and a basketball team that couldn't make it to the big dance. Rah.

Anonymous said...

Whoops ... forgot UNC. DU is the 5th best team in Colorado.

Anonymous said...

DU finished well above both Air Force and UNC in the final RPI.

Solid third best program in Colorado.
