Zack Blom Saves DU's Bacon

Box Score

From: DU Athletics Website

Zack Blom (left) picked a dramtic moment to score his first goal of the season to bring Denver back in the Third Period against MSU-Mankato. DU lead for much of the game, but fell behind in the Third Period before Blom struck gold.

DU used a goal and an assist from freshman Tyler Ruegsegger and 32 saves from senior goaltender Glenn Fisher to earn a 3-3 tie with the Minnesota State University Mavericks. The Pioneers also received a goal from Chris Butler.

"We played very well in the first period. Our transition game was there, we jumped to openings and defensively we were strong," said Denver Head Coach George Gwozdecky. "From the very first shift in the second period, we were asleep. Glenn Fisher was terrific in the third period and really stole a point for us tonight."

The Pioneers lit up the scoreboard first as Ruegsegger notched his fifth goal of the season 56 seconds into the contest. A failed clearing attempt by Minnesota State from behind their own net bounced off the skate of Brian Gifford and was directed in front of the net, where Ruegsegger stood waiting. Tom May returned to action for the Pioneers and got an assist on the play in his first shift of the season.
.
Butler gave DU a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission when he notched a power-play goal at the 9:44 mark. Ryan Dingle won a faceoff in DU's offensive zone back to defenseman Keith Seabrook. Seabrook fed a cross-ice pass to Butler, who fired a shot that went over MSU netminder Mike Zacharias' (22 saves) shoulder and into the upper-left hand corner of the goal.
.
Blom, seeing his first action of the season, tied the game at 3-3 late in the Third with his first goal of the season. Ruegsegger set up the play by making a nifty move to avoid a defender before passing the puck through the slot to Blom, who rifled a shot past Zacharias from the top of the left faceoff circle.

Neither team was able to score in the closing minutes of the third period or the extra frame.

Good game. Fisher looked very good in goal, and his team really owes him one!

Good luck tonight...may the best Maverick win:)

Fishers playing with a newfound confidence this season. Last night he was a bit like Rocky out there, getting knocked out a few times but battling on.

Mankato looks much improved from the beginning of the season and Morin & Wagner are two very good players. Zacharias has a scrappy game in goal.

The Pios need the Vman back bigtime. No way he would have allowed a player to run the goalie like that. The defense looked lost out there without him. Get well and come back ASAP Vman!

I was even worried about Fisher. Not sure if you watched it live or on TV..but on TV you could see how shaken he was and was and all jittery..even after the game his speech seemed delayed.

Anon: If you watched the game on TV, you could clearly see that our guy didn't mean to hit Fisher at all. I think the other guys that were "right there" saw that too, thus they didn't fight and get stupid penalties. Fisher moved over and up behind our guy (which it was Hanson by the way...ref totally called the wrong guy, only saw the 9 on the jersey and called 19 instead of 29) and then Hanson turned around, knocking into him because he didn't know he had moved right there. He got a penalty for it...but it was kind of BS...but understandable because he did knock his shoulder into Fisher when he turned.

Overall I think the game was pretty clean and played hard by both teams...but harder by the Mavs and they NEEDED to win. Darn!

Zacharias is still a little shaky in goal but once he finds his groove he'll be awesome.

I think one thing people don't have a clear understanding is that you cannot run into the goalie whether it is intentional or not while he is in the crease. Last night it did not look intentional but it happened. The NCAA specifically addressed this isssue last offseason which I know Swami touched on in one of the USCHO threads within the past week. It is almost like no fault insurance, if it happens you have some responsibility whether it was your fault or not.

I agree...if you're knocking into the goalie you should be called on it, I was trying to say it wasn't intentional or a "charging" type thing...thus your guys were smart in not throwing punches and getting put into the box for it.

I just don't like in general how much all of the goalies are getting knocked around this year. I felt this way before the Tormey incident...and now feel even stronger about it!

I do think the refs need to be more consistant on the goalie call though, cuz one of your guys nailed Zacharias in the same manner and didn't get called on it..so us getting called on it then was kinda BS...but legit at the same time. Make sense? However, the Mavs take more BS penalties anyways cuz Jutting screams after EVERY darn whistle and argues everything..so all of the refs seem to call us on more cuz they're sick of Jutting and it's some sort of retaliation.

Oh, by the way...the wife of your coach must dress him for sure. He looked sharp last night but both my friend and I agreed there was no way he put that outfit together himself:)

As du78 stated, intention does not factor into contact with the goalie. It only factors into whether you get the crap beaten out of your after the contact (intentional) or whether you are merely roughed up after the contact (unintentional). The D should never allow contact with their goalie to happen - period. If for some reason it does (like last night), there has to be some repurcussion (face wash, etc.).

As to Gwoz and his attire, apparently you havent been following Gwoz/DU for very long. Gwoz has alway been a sharp dresser with a great style.

I am a newbie to this blog (under a year of following it) so I'm not sure your take on the coach's attire. I would put money down though that his wife chooses his clothes because I don't know of any straight men who aren't in the retail (fashion related) field that dress that nice! Who knows..maybe he's an exception. Either way, he looked pretty snazzy!

No, I totally hear your point about the contact. Contact is contact...I just wish the damn refs would be consistant SOMEWHAT on all calls! My other point was to be HAPPY your guys made the right choice to not fight and end up in the box for stupid penalties.
