Niagara Falls In Overtime

Its starting to become predictable. DU wins another game in overtime with less than 10 seconds remaining. First time it happened on the road and shocked the Badgers. Tonight the victim was a plucky little team from upstate New York. Once again DU used a stifling defense with the added twist tonight of a cascade of shots.

Freshman Tyler Ruegsegger (left) scored the game-winning goal with seven seconds left in overtime and Fish made 19 saves as the Denver Pioneers defeated Niagara 2-1. DU improves to 16-7-2.

"We played a good all-around hockey game tonight and score an opportunistic goal in overtime to get a big win," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "Niagara played a smart road game tonight. Their goaltender played well and they blocked a lot of shots, but in the end our guys got it done."

Ruegsegger ripped the game-winning power-play goal from the slot after accepting a behind-the-back pass from Brock "Meadowlark Lemon" Trotter. The game-winning goal came on Denver's eighth shot in the extra session. The Pioneers outshot Niagara 54-20 in the contest to improve to 5-4 against ranked opponents this season. The Purple Eagles' Juliano Pagliero turned in an outstanding game with 52 saves.

DU held a 1-0 lead for much of the game after a goal from freshman Rhett Rakhshani at 15:53 of the first period.

Niagara's Ted Cook finally solved Fisher when he shoveled in a pass from Sean Bentivoglio at 10:26 of the third period.

In an overtime riddled with penalties, it was the Pioneers who received a power play with just over a minute left on the clock, setting up Ruegsegger's heroics.

Ryan Dingle added two assists for the Pioneers who improved to 9-3-2 at home. DU finished 2-for-8 on the power play, while Niagara was blanked on all five man-advantage opportunities.

Pulled groin on Thursday. Doesn't appear too serious. May start on Saturday night or next week against Gophers.

I like the "Meadowlark Lemon" reference to Trotter. It seems he was "creating" out there all night. DU could have easily had 6 plus goals last night. Gott bury the biscuit better.

Dingle looked frustrated last night. He was having a hard time launching shots. He's got one goal in the last five outings which when you look at the stats in the first half is a considerable cool down for him. They are 8-3 when he scores. He had two assists last night but the first was a gift from the skate of an eagle.

Got to love the fact that the three top teams that played last night went down! Nice for DU to see those Gophers are maybe a little human. Hope Peter can get limber and play tonight. He looked the best I've ever seen last Friday. That one save he made with the knob
of his stick when was behind him was amazing! He was dialed in on the puck big time!
