Stastny Named NHL Calder Trophy Finalist

CALDER MEMORIAL TROPHY (outstanding rookie) Finalists: Evgeni Malkin, Penguins; Jordan Staal, Penguins; Paul Stastny, Avalanche.

DU Alum Paul Stastny capped off an amazing first season in the NHL by being nominated as one of the three best rookie players by the NHL earlier today. Stastny was the 44th player selected in the second round of draft by the Colorado Avalanche in 2005.

Stastny ranked second among the league rookies in scoring with 76 points, trailing Calder finalist Evgeni Malkin. His 76 points are the most by a rookie in Avalanche history and the fourth most by a rookie in franchise history. Only Stastny's father Peter (109) and uncles Marian (89) and Anton (85) recorded more points in their first NHL season.

His season was highlighted by recording a point in 20 consecutive games from Feb. 3 - March 17, the longest scoring streak by a rookie in NHL history.
