DU Lineup Against Calgary Featured Surprises

Coach Gwozdecky proved to have a few tricks up his sleeve as he deftly sprinkled his Freshman players throughout the lineup with some outstanding results against the University of Calgary on Sunday night.

The biggest surprise was incoming Freshman Chris Nutini starting at right defenseman for the Pioneers alongside Chris Butler. Nutini made the jump from the NAHL Wichita Fall Wildcats look seamless as he record two assists and was +2 for the evening.

John Ryder from Colorado Springs also had a strong game defensively, while being paired with DU Captain Andrew Thomas on the blueline.

Anthony Maiani got to start with Tyler Ruegsegger & Rhett Rakhshani and the result was a goal and two assists and for the young Mr. Maiani. He ended up +2 on the evening and played a very solid game.

Tyler Bozak & Kyle Ostrow netted goals on the 2nd & 3rd lines respectively and looked like valuable additions to the team. Finally, Jesse Martin contributed an assist.

Marc "Chevy" Cheverie looked comfortable between the pipes, so the largest recruiting class in DU hockey got off to a great start last night. All in all a good performance and the coaching staff looks to have some valuable new additions that should make an impact this season.

Thought the Pios had a solid game for the exhibition. Looks like another good freshman class. I really liked what I saw of Maiani, Bozak, Ostrow, Martin, Nutini, and Ryder. Those forwards should make solid contributions, and Nutini and Ryder were impressive. Any word on why Jackson didn't play?

I thought May had a good game as well. That wrist shot should generate some goals this year. Glasser played a good game, physical and energetic. Did anyone see the hit on Rakhshani? Jeez, he was flattened. He needs to keep his head up a little more. So does Trotter. I've seen opposing d-men try to line him up as well. Thomas, Butler et el played their usual solid games.

Looking forward to seeing if this team can get back to the big stage this year.......

Good points.

I would just assume that Jackson was just a healthy scratch, but don't have any info...

I also was impressed with the team. May could have a nice year if he can stay out of the doghouse. Now lets go out and sweep Maine.
