Air Force End 28 Year Losing Streak To DU 5-2

From: DU Athletics Website

USAFA, Colo. – Matt Fairchild scored three goals and Andrew Volkening stopped 29 shots to lead Air Force to a 5-2 win over No. 4 Denver at Cadet Ice Arena. The upset win was Air Force’s first over Denver since Jan. 15, 1980, breaking the Pioneers’ 19-game winning streak against the Falcons.

“Give Air Force full credit tonight,” DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. “They outworked us and I’m really disappointed in our effort.”

Tom May, Patrick Mullen and Kyle Ostrow each tallied two points for the Pioneers. Peter Mannino suffered his second consecutive loss after allowing four goals on 13 shots.

DU pulled Marc Cheverie, who had replaced Mannino in goal, to create a 6-on-5 advantage, but Fairchild completed his first career hat trick at 15:08 with the empty net. The Pioneers outshot Air Force 31-16, but went 0-for-5 on the power play. The Falcons finished 0-for-3 with the man-advantage.(Full story & stats at DU Athletics Website)

5 goals on 16 shots. Pathetic effort tonight.

Give Air Force credit. They played their asses off, as we all knew they would. But......

That was abysmal. That was as poorly as I've seen DU play in a long time. With the exception of a couple guys, no one played with any effort or intensity. Hard to figure....the Pairwise rankings are out, it's the stretch run, and every game is important. These guys have to remember last season--alledgedly one more victory would have gotten them a berth. This team has too much talent and character and has had too good of a start to flounder again late in the season.

just saw the score and woah, didn't see that one coming! I'm glad you guys got 'em first, we had better be ready tomorrow night!

Didn't get to watch the game but wow... what the hell happened?

DU BETTER start stepping it up... we don't need a repeat of the last two seasons.

Nobody protected rebounds, passes were off target, couldn't score on a 2 MINUTE 5 ON 3? What happened after the first period in last Friday's Wisconsin game? We went from one of the hottest teams in college hockey to a potentially disastrous slide.

Passes either between 2 DU players or straight to an AFA player, getting stripped every time DU tried to carry the puck, poor goaltending, I don't think DU even got a shot on goal on their 5-on-3 (probably only attempting 2 or 3), no spirit, no grit, no anything, an empty effort...

It sucked to be there.

Pathetic. Just effing awful. No fire, intensity etc. You guys are a disgrace to the great players who have worn the crimson and gold with pride.

Sounds like it was awful! But in the end--not to much effect in the pairwise. The question is will this team rebound from this second half slump? They go against a good team tonight that will be putting thier all into it.

I've been talking about the crappy PP all season. 0- 5 last night! Even if they make the tourney 15% isn't going to be good enough to win it.

I wonder if George goes with Chevy in net tonight to mix things up a little?

Geez, what a disaster last night. I don't think it's time to panic yet, but DU has to play better. No more complacency and laziness late in the season.

Time to go on a beaver hunt tonight.

We licked some beaver tonight. I see where CCtig's love interest, Billy boy, broke the leg of Eric Ehn. Nice dirty play you simpleton.

Maybe we should start a "CCtig-style" e-mail campaign to get tBillygoat suspended... :-)
