DU senior goaltender Peter Mannino and freshman forward Tyler Bozak have earned Red Baron® WCHA co-Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors. The Denver tandem was honored for their efforts during last weekend’s series against Minnesota.
Mannino stopped 34 of 35 shots last Friday (Feb. 8) and led the DU penalty-killing units to a 4-of-4 effort in a 1-1 overtime tie against the Golden Gophers at Magness Arena. Then last Saturday (Feb. 9) night, Mannino came back to stop 30 of 31 shots on goal and another perfect 5-of-5 penalty-kill effort in the Pioneers’ 4-1 victory over Minnesota. On the weekend, Mannino stopped 64 of 66 shots on goal for a .970 saves percentage, while the Saturday victory moved him into a tie for sixth place on DU’s career win list with 56, surpassing 2004 NCAA Frozen Four Most Outstanding Player Adam Berkhoel. On the season, Mannino leads Denver with an 18-8-1 record, 2.15 goals-against average, and .921 saves percentage. The defensive player of the week honor was Mannino’s fourth of the season.
Bozak scored his fourth shorthanded goal in the 1-1 overtime tie. He tallied the game-winning goal and one assist in the 4-1 win. In addition to his three points, Bozak fired eight shots on goal in the series, earned a +3 plus-minus rating, had six hits, and blocked four shots. He is currently in the midst of a three-game goal streak during which he has 3-1–4. On the season, Bozak ranks third in scoring among WCHA rookies overall with 14 goals, 12 assists and 26 points in 28 games. He is second among rookies in WCHA scoring with 11-9–20 in 20 league games. The rookie of the week honor was Bozak’s fourth of the season.
