HOUGHTON, Mich. – Junior Michael-Lee Teslak made 32 saves to lead Michigan Tech (12-17-5, 8-14-4 WCHA) to a 2-1 win over No. 7 Denver (22-11-1, 16-9-1) before 2,253 fans in a wild WCHA finish tonight at MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
Tech held a 2-0 lead until Rhett Rakhshani (Huntington Beach, Calif.) scored on a 6-on-4 advantage with goaltender Peter Mannino (Farmington Hills, Mich.) out of the net at 18:13. Tech committed two minor penalties in the final 1:36 and Gwozdecky kept Mannino (19 saves) out of the net to create a 6-on-3 advantage for the final 90 seconds, but the Pioneers failed to score the equalizer.
Alex Lord and Geoff Kinrade scored goals for the Huskies, who snapped a four-game losing streak and earned a series split from the Pioneers.
Lord capitalized on a turnover by Kyle Ostrow (Calgary, Alberta) in the Pioneer zone and scored the games’ lone goal of the first period at 12:41.
Kinrade made it 2-0 at 9:08 of the final stanza when he backhanded a goal past Mannino high to the stick side.
The Pioneers outshot Tech 33-21 and went 1-for-5 on the power play. DU’s penalty kill shined with a 3-for-3 effort.
DU plays in-state rival Colorado College in a home-and-home series March 7-8.
Notes: The Pioneers are sixth in the latest PairWise Rankings...Patrick Mullen was ejected from the game with nine seconds left in the first period for checking-from-behind. DU has tallied a power-play goal in 13 of its last 16 games. Kyle Ostrow extended his assist streak to four games. DU is 20-2-1 when holding opponents to two goals or less. DU is third in the WCHA with 33 league points.

We stay 6th in the PW. Unfortunately,
we're left with no room for error in the playoffs. Could face the Gophers, Bulldogs or Tech--all tough competitors! Loosing Mullen for Friday night sucks! Sounds like the first period was more of the same bad transition stuff that has plagued us in the second half. CC continues to roll @ home. Bachman has been incredible in the second half.
The ending just goes to show that Maine isn't alone. This is the second time I've seen DU end a game with a 6 on 3 since April of '04 and we haven't scored either time.
eoxmjxywhat's up with mullen? he's out for the CC game on friday?
the boys aren't goin' anywhere in the playoffs if they can't score more than one goal, this is a bad problem that's been haunting us in the 2nd hafl
As I understand the call Mullen received was a game MC which means that he is gone for the balance of the game in progress. If he had received a DQ then the extra game would be added. The problem is that the two terms--game MC and DQ--are often mixed up by some fans and a certain radio announcer who should stick to selling used cars.
Frustrating loss tonight. After what seemed to be an uninspired start, the Pios had their chances. A split on the road isn't bad, but a sweep would have been great going into the CC weekend.
The Pios had better be ready Friday night.
I love the fact that I complimented CC and then they gave up three unanswered goals!
Amazing that UND has a chance to win the WCHA given how terrible their first half was.
I think Jay does a good job on the play by play and he's funny too! My bad on the major to Mullen. The rule book is not any where close to committed to memory. I live and breath several other things in addition to hockey> :-)
Nelson, are you serious. Stickney tries to mask his ineptitude by making jokes about everything. Jimbo is right. Jay should return to being Shagman.
Yay Kinrade! What a stud. :)

Given that somebody doing college hockey play by play makes something close to minimum wage I am serious.
His main job is to create a verbal representation of the action. He does this fine. I listen to lots of other people do it on the web and I'd say he's at or above average. The hockey expert is suppose to be the color analyst which we don't even get.
Not taking 4 points from a 9th place Tech team is hard to swallow. Granted, Tech plays a style that can be very effective (some would say ugly and boring), but with all due respect (and I mean that sincerely--I have a lot of respect for Tech and the program there), this is a team DU should beat 9 times out of 10, especially this year, given Tech's struggles. To only get 2 goals this weekend just isn't good enough. And the PP continues to sputter. I know Teslak played well, but based on the radio broadcasts Mannino had the better weekend, having to make the tougher saves.
Having said all that, I'm not terribly surprised with the split. It seems DU was forced into playing a style they are not comfortable with (again, Tech executed its game plan very well) and just never fired on all cylinders. I actually think playing CC to finish off the regular season will give the Pioneers more of an opportunity to employ their strengths...skating, speed, transition game.
I could go either way on Stickney. He can be entertaining at times but also annoying. And sometimes I get the feeling he doesn't know a whole about hockey. At the very least he does seem to have good repoire with the players and coaches.
