FARIBAULT - DU recruit David Carle walked out of the Shattuck-St. Mary's locker room Monday afternoon and tapped the sign on the inside of the door.

One minute later, Jordon Murray did the same thing.

The sign had a simple message the Sabres lived by all year -
"Make the plays your teammates rely on you to make"
"Do the things your teammates rely on you to do"
Instead of walking out to the ice in their skates and uniforms, the players were heading back to their rooms, smiles on their faces and 'national champions' etched on their shirts and hats.

The Shattuck boys prep team returned to Faribault Monday after winning USA Hockey's Tier 1 18 & Under National Championship for the second year in a row. It was the program's fifth national title since 2001, and first-ever back-to-back win.

"Ever since day one, this was our goal, go back-to-back," said goalie Geoff Sadjadi. "Everyone was pretty confident that we would be the first Shattuck team to be able to pull this off.

"It feels good to show the world what kind of program we are."

The Sabres went 5-1 to defend their title at this year's tournament, held in Buffalo, N.Y. The Sabres beat Team Illinois 5-1 in the title game.

"We just played well all the way down the stretch," said forward Derek Stepan. "We said that we don't want to have any regrets or 'what ifs,' and we just came out and played."

Stepan was the tournament's overall leading scorer with six goals and seven assists, five of which came against LA Selects in the Sabres' opening game. Eli Zuck and Murray were also in the top six in total points.

"It's been pretty unbelievable," said defenseman Carle. "It's huge for us, the guys, the program and the school to do what we did and end on top. It's a lot of fun."

Shattuck-St. Mary's will honor the team's victory today at 9:40 a.m. inside the school's gymnasium.

Carle will play defense for the University Of Denver next season.

How does David Carle measure up to Matt Carle? I haven't seen many DU games recently in person but i remember seeing Matt dominate games a few years ago.

Its hard to say at this point.

Matt told a Denver newspaper that David was better than he was at the same age, so thats a point of reference.

I think we may have a better idea on June 20th when the NHL draft takes place and we'll see where David is selected. Perhaps the NHL scouts will confirm Matt's opinion, perhaps not.

I think most Pioneer fans are excited to see David continue the Carle legacy at DU. For better or worse, we're just psyched to see him play.

I have a feeling David Carle will be draft late 1st-early 2nd due to the fact that this years NHL Draft class is so strong in defenseman and so many team's are looking to fill needs at that position. A team like Anaheim could use youth at the position or even New Jersey or Detroit late.

I'm stoked we get to seen another Carle in a Pioneer uniform. Matt was a very special player at DU, needless to say, and if David even approaches that level it'll be great.
