FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

University of Denver students announce “Defining a Pioneer”

Denver, CO, October 31, 2008 - Campus leaders at the University of Denver have organized a “Defining a Pioneer” community discussion to be held Thursday, November 6, 2008 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. in Sturm Hall at the University of Denver. With Chancellor Bob Coombe’s letter charging students, alumni, faculty, and staff to hold “community-wide discussion(s) of what it means to be a Pioneer,” this first in a series of discussions will begin to identify the importance of tradition and identity at the University.

Interested alumni, students, community members, faculty, staff, and administrators are encouraged to attend. The 90 minute program will consist of:
  • a video introduction to the history and traditions of the University
  • perspectives describing the offending nature of the Boone mascot
  • perspectives on the history and traditions of the University from a seasoned professor
  • small group discussions on three guiding questions
  • large group discussions on the conclusions reached during the breakout sessions
This event is the first in a series that will be held to allow the stakeholders of the University the opportunity to sound-off on what being a Pioneer means to them. Log on to www.du.edu/pioneer/ for more information as plans develop. Further, interested parties who are unable to attend are encouraged to direct their thoughts to pioneer@du.edu

Thanks Damien for getting this up so quick! Please direct any questions my way. Also, I have some other versions of the flyer if you want a better colorized version.

This is our chance, we need to rally the troops.

I'd suggest everybody come to the meeting with an open mind, and in the meantime, start thinking about potential Pioneer alternatives to Denver Boone, especially those alternatives that are likely to not upset women or Native Americans. As much as many of us would like to see Boone come back officially, that dog won't hunt.

What about mascot of a foot kicking a tiger's arse! I'll attend this meeting, but I don't want to hear the negatives about Boone. I'm curious to know if when they talk about people who might be offended, if anyone actually has stood up and say they in fact were against the Denver Boone.

We're supposed to come with an open mind, but a Boone proposal "won't hunt?"

I will say it one more time, you can't be all things to all people. No matter what you say or what you do, someone or some group is not going to like it. Like someone said, let's have those that are offended stand up and be counted.

OK, now all people that didn't go to DU sit down. Now who's offended?

Anyone...
