Wiercioch's First Team Canada Scrimmage

One scout, in Ottawa for the world junior tournament, said Friday that of the 38 players vying for spots on Team Canada, Wiercioch was the most improved player last year.
University of Denver defenseman Patrick Wiercioch has been invited to try out for the Team Canada Under-20 Team. Last night in Ottawa was his first scrimmage and Wiercioch's "Red Team" lost to the "White Team" 6-3.

Wiercioch said, "Not too many freshmen in college get the invite to Team Canada, so it's definitely a special feeling. It was a lot of nerves on the flight coming up here, but once I got around the guys and on the ice, it all went away."

While Wiercioch did not score any points last night, observers noted that, "When a penalty was called there would be a 5 on 3 for one minute followed by a 5 on 4 for the last minute. Of 3 calls against team red, Wiercioch was out for 2 of the 5 on 3s (was on for a long shift right before the last one was called)."

Wiercioch has two more scrimmages and one more practice before the team roster is selected on Monday. If he makes the team, Canada will play three exhibition games against competing countries around Canada leading up to Christmas and then the tournament begins Dec. 26.
