Would you be interesting in donating to help us "Bring Back Boone?" We're trying to raise $4,000 to purchase a mascot costume that would be similar to "Big Red" at Sacred Heart University.
We're looking for

If Boone gets a badass grin like that, I'm in haha
One vote for "Bad Ass Grin."
If you read the link to the Sacred Heart University website, "Big Red" can dunk basketballs, ice skate and do gymnastics because the costume is flexible.
I'm in.
Wow.
Business is booming. We've just raised $800 in twenty minutes.
An alum in Atlanta came up with the idea and has been working with the mascot company all morning. He told me that he was sick and tired of the "politics" and wanted some "action" so he called the company on his own.
The plan would be for students to wear the "Pioneer Outfit" to various sporting events at DU.
They need about 8 weeks to complete the project, but are able to do "rush jobs."
Perfect. Maybe he and Coombe can have a little word about "diversity"
DG, would Coombe's storm troopers allow someone into Magness wearing that? I hate to go through all of this and find that out.
As long as he/she has a ticket... why not. Besides, DU has already said:
"...It seems reasonable that students and alumni be allowed to use the image as a celebration of that past, to the extent that they may choose."
- Chancellor Coombe's email to students and alumni on Oct 20, 2008
I guess we'd have to find out.
Can you imagine how much bigger of an issue it would become if DU turned a student wearing the Boone outfit away? That would turn this media embarrassment into an even bigger fiasco... Imagine how many more alumni would get even more upset... They would then look hypocritical and unreasonable.
I'd go with "even more" hypocritical and unreasonable. :-)
Interesting....
I don't quite have $200 to spare right now; I've received my unicorn but not the food stipend yet.
::bah dum tssh::
Seriously though; can I send ya a check for $50, Damien? ;)
If a guy dressed as a tiger with a noose around his neck can get in, I don't foresee any problems. Nevertheless, problems and increased publicity in this case might actually help...
Trev,
Yes. We've had two recent alums donate $50 today which is awesome. I'll match your $50 donation and the other alums $50 as well.
Now we're up to $1,000.
Someone just pledged $100 via email. We're up to $1,200 pledged in and hour and a half. :-)
Another $200 pledged via email.
We're now at $1,400 and once we collect $2,000 it covers the deposit and the company can begin work on the costume.
Pioneers are people not mascots.
Do you have a mockup of the costume?
We are waiting on the first sketch from the company's artist. Any information or drawings we receive will be posted on the blog for feedback.
I'm in for 50 bucks. How do I send it?
I'll match your $50 donation.

We're now at $1,500 and as soon as we reach 2 Grand, we'll place the order. :-)
Another email for $100.
Gotta tell ya, I don't like that mascot very much. Is the one your getting exactly like that one? He looks like Paul Bunyan dressed like an Indian.
Anon,
Thanks for the feedback on the Pioneer mascot. At this point we're receiving drawings from mascot companies.
The first drawing come in yesterday and it looks nothing like "Big Red." Hopefully I can post the drawing today.
"Big Red" is similar to "Sparty" from Michigan State which is an outstanding mascot.
We're going to keep everybody "in the loop" and solicit feedback, but the people who donate the money and DU students who assist this blog are going to have a major influence in what direction we go.
We still want feedback from everybody at this point, DU fans and others who read this blog.
Just make sure boone has a beard
Keep the feed back coming.
Go to mascots.com to see what other schools are doing.
This might sound far-fetched, but do you think DU might try to pull any copyright or license claims on this mascot? I know people do it all the time on the "likeness" of themselves or other intangible licenses they may own. Just a thought...trying to stay one step ahead of the Coombe squad...
I guess anything is possible. We'll see 'em in court. :-)
I think DU's most likely strategy based on their past inept behavior is to roll out some sort of PC mascot that is backed by "student leaders" aka AUSA Senate.
The History & Traditions Committee is meeting for the first time this week since Coombes' email. This is a step towards "defining what a Pioneer is." Then they'll come up with a mascot (hopefully its good, but it may suck) and then they'll roll it out.
What you won't see is a vote between DU's new mascot and Boone.
If the heathens start doing their own thing, there can only be one answer to such blasphemy: Buddy Christ.
...or should I say buddy Coombe? Thumps up to that!
