The Youngstown Phantoms announced that defenseman Scott Mayfield has committed to play collegiately at the University of Denver following his USHL career. Mayfield was selected by the Indiana Ice in the seventh round of the USHL Entry Draft in May before being acquired by the Phantoms in a trade.

"Scott bloomed this spring and his stock just exploded," Phantoms Assistant General Manager Jason Koehler said. "He has a ton of upside and projects to be a high-end college player and a pro prospect."

The Phantoms are excited about their new 6-3, 185-pound defenseman and believe Mayfield can play in all situations this season. "He has good hockey sense, can move the puck well and enjoys the physical play," said Koehler. "We see a high ceiling with him."

The St. Louis native was recently named to the roster for the U.S. Under-18 Select Team that will compete at the 2009 Ivan Hlinka Memorial in Piestany, Slovakia from August 11-15.

Interesting that Mayfield only went in the 7th round of the USHL Draft. Then Indiana must not have "protected" him in the Expansion Draft.

Youngstown grabs the kid and suddenly, due to his performance at the US National Development Camp he's a hot commodity.

A lot of dicussion on whether it is better to recruit NHL undrafted vs drafted players, most top players commit to college before being drafted. Wisconsin is the only program that seems to have a problem playing drafted players, as pointed out on a North Dakota blog Eaves has pushed drafted players out and kept many undrafted grinders. Williams,Bearson,Erstad,Hickey, all come to mind. Seems if you are a top player and Eaves decides you are done you may never be given the shot at Wisconsin. Mayfield will be happy with his choice.
