Defenseman Scott Mayfield Commits To DU

(left) DU received a commitment from blue-chip defenseman Scott Mayfield (#2)

According to Western College Hockey Blog the University of Denver has received a commitment from defenseman Scott Mayfield (6'3" 191). He is 16 years-old and will be eligible for the NHL Draft in 2011 and is slotted to arrive at DU in 2011-12.

Mayfield will play this season with the Youngstown Phantoms, the newest expansion team in the USHL. The Phantoms defected from the NAHL after last season.

Mayfield grew up playing for the St. Louis AAA Blues, the program that has produced 2010 DU recruit David Makowski, former DU stars and current NHLers Chris Butler & Paul Stastny.

Scott Mayfield is described as an extremely skilled, big defenseman who will almost certainly be drafted in 2011.

Mayfield has been selected to play for Team USA at the Ivan Hlinka Tournament in Slovakia August 11-15. The 2009 Ivan Hlinka Memorial will feature teams from Canada, Czech Republic Finland, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States.

Chris Butler could have been a role model for Scott. Wonder if he knows or knows of Makowski?

Almost certainly he knows Makowski and it probably played a decision in his coming to DU.

In two years almost a third of DU's roster will have played youth hockey for the Littleton Hawks, the Camrose Kodiaks, Anchorage's Jr. Program or St. Louis AAA Blues.

Get a couple Minnesota boys in there from the Iron Range and we'll have outselves the most diverse program around!

Haha

So if this guy is coming on 2011, don't we still need a blue chipper to fill in for Brookwell and probably Wiercioch in 2010-11?

Looks like another excellent recruit. Don't forget that Paul Stastny came out of St. Louis before Butler. Also former DU d-man Bruce Affleck works for the St. Louis Blues in their front office and has resided in that area since the 1970s when he played for the Blues. Don't know if he is another conduit to the players in the St. Louis area for DU.

The plan was to bring David Makowski in for the upcoming season if Wiercioch left early.

Makowski will replace Brookwell and DU will have to have someone else waiting in the wings if Wiercioch leaves at the end of the season.

If Wiercioch leaves it will hardly be a surprise, so they have a year to work things out.

So what would you say our chances are of another national championship this year?

DU is going to be ranked #1 or #2 in the National Polls heading into the season. DU is certainly the preseason WCHA favorite.

Getting Ruegsegger, Rakhshani, Colborne and Wiercioch to not defect to the pros was an unexpected bonus.

That being said, BU was easily the best team in the county last year and still needed many lucky bounces to win the NC.

DU has a good shot, but they will also need a lot of luck.

A 6'3 190-lb highly skilled defenseman--I like the sounds of that.

Can't wait until Oct 4!
